new mead maker

i'm planning on making a small batch of mead. i have a wide mouth 1 gal glass jar with airlock. i'm thinking i'll need "head room" in the jar during primary fermentation. if i make 3/4 gallon, will that leave enough room for the "foam"? TIA

Re: 2 week foam cap

my bottling went well. and the ale tasted pretty darn good after fermenting. with my last 2 batches i was very careful with temp control during fermentation. i've learned with doing that, less bottle conditioning is needed to obtain a good tasting ale. my ale has been in the bottle 9 days now at ~66...

Re: 2 week foam cap

thanks for easing my mind brewers! the foam is gone. i think bringing the temp up a bit may have helped. in any case, my hops have been added and i plan to bottle on 8/8.

Re: Parish Brewing Opus Vert

i slowly sipped a glass of gitm last night about 2 hours before i turned in. i like it! parish must dry hop the heck out of that ale. i had a Great nights sleep. it seems to me hops really are helpful for sleep. the abv sure didn't hurt.

Re: Parish Brewing Opus Vert

They changed something with it because it's just so-so. Or maybe I'm just so used to hoppy beers, this one is not hoppy enough. :) I'm in Metairie but the beer distributors in Louisiana suck like politicians! i'm not a big fan of hoppy beers, yet. but i liked it. i'm also not a seasoned beer taster...

Re: feedback please

i decided to just make the nut brown ale as is with no hop addition. i did put a bag of demon's brewing enhancer plus in to get the abv up a bit. i pitched ~7 g. of s-04 yeast for my 2 gal. batch. i want to see how it tastes on it's own before tweaking the kit. i do want to thank y'all for the input!

Re: refractometer

Another suggestion to avoid hydrometer waste and multiple samples: After you pull your hydrometer sample, continue to check that same sample. Just treat it like a mini fermenter. What I mean is, take your sample, get the reading, then remove the hydrometer from the wort/beer. Cover the tube with a ...

Re: feedback please

fuggles be mainly an aroma hop. boiling for 20 minutes will contribute flavor more so than aroma if that's what you want. i'd be more inclined to dry hop with the 1/2z ... that's what i am after, flavor. and to experiment a little. i wasn't going to add the can of hme until after the boil. in the p...

i bought demon's nut brown ale kit and a pack of enhancer plus. my idea is to dissolve the enhancer and the can of ume into about 5 cu. of water. bring to boil and add about 1/4 to 1/2 oz fuggles. boil lightly for 20 min. remove the hops, then add the hme. add to my lbk that has a gallon of refriger...

refractometer

i'm looking at getting one. i see they are great for og, but require calculation for a true fg. i'm not interested in finding abv. but would like to avoid hydrometer wastage. if i maintained a consistent readings, say after 3 weeks in the fermenter, taken for 3 days would that indicate fermentation ...
