Re: Sulfur taste in hydrometer sample
I'd also recommend dropping the temp slowly when you do get back to the lagering. Large temp swings can cause the yeast to excrete some of the compounds they have absorbed. I'm sure some more time will allow it to clean up more. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk I read this somewhere... or heard ...

Re: Sulfur taste in hydrometer sample
Thanks for the pointers. I did not throw it right into the keezer yet so it sounds like I should give it another week, then go into the long cold lagering phase. Appreciate the tips!

Sulfur taste in hydrometer sample
Hello again all.... I recently brewed a Helles following Gordon Strong's recipe from "Modern Homebrew Recipes". When I put this together I followed his recipe in the book, not taking into account that he scales his up to 6.5 gallons and I make a 5 gallon recipe. Long story short this batch...

Re: Simple HERMS...
Thanks for the review. Sounds like a simple way to get a HERMS system. Most likely less expensive than something custom made.

HLT set up for HERMS
Folks, Long time peeper, not often poster... Looking at getting a HERMS set up and potentially getting a 10 gallon HLT with internal coils to control my temps. I've seen other people that use their immersion chiller in a HLT to get the same effect but didn't feel like dealing with more hoses, blah b...

Trasfer Wort to Primary
I've been all over the internet looking at different methods for transferring the wort into the primary fermenter. I currently just dump my hops in the wort during the boil then dump my wort through a strainer into the primary. One technique that I see online is creating a whirlpool prior to cooling...

Re: Brew craft recipe kits
I keep bouncing back and forth if I want to go AG. In reality I'm having fun doing some partial mash recipes and learning more about the different ingredients that make up good beer. I've heard people say that you can't make good beer with extracts but to be honest the more "craft" beers ...

Re: Now that's active
As a science teacher, I have grown many microorganisms in "Pond Water". However, they actually seem to do best in Deer Park spring water, and that is what we use in our laboratory experiments. I would bet the yeast appreciate the particular mix of minerals in spring water too. BTW, there ...

Re: New Brewer Questions
It's good to hear that it wasn't just me lol. Since you followed the same path, any advice on the Amber Ale? I just cold-crashed it today and will be bottling on Wednesday and letting those sit for 4 weeks. Should I do anything different? Should I cold-condition for a couple weeks after the 4 weeks...

Re: Foaming after hot break?
One thing you may want to try is Fermcap. Works like a champ and havent had a boil over any time Ive used it. Really helps me multitask by being able to go in and out of the house to clean some equipment as I go and for future steps, or at least get a little organization done in the garage as I don...

Re: Foaming after hot break?
I used 2.5 gallons of water. I was wondering if that may have been the case since I had a full lb of DME and 6.6 lbs of LME.russki wrote:How much water did you use for the boil? If the wort is too concentrated, it may lead to foaming.

Re: Foaming after hot break?
Although rare, after hot break, u can have a foam up again. I have had this happen albeit not bad enough to overflow. I've had it maybe 2-3 times from over 100 batches. IMHO, NEVER turn your back to a boil, period. THAT is when it will bite u in the arse. Yes, this was quite strange and I'm glad th...

Foaming after hot break?
I made an American IPA today (gonna call it Birthday IPA for the Marine Corp Birthday) and even after the boil started I thought that I was going to have a mess. This did have 1 lb of DME and I've seen the foam a little higher in the past when I've used the DME. Since I've already had one boil over ...
