Re: What are you brewing/bottling/kegging?
Hey All, finished off my BrewYear with a easy TripleHeader. I had 2 each B/D Sinful Swills,Stouts, and Brown Ales. Chucked 2 each into the pot at flameout and am fermenting with Muntons yeast I had laying around the fridge. These were the remains of the Sctatch and Dent purchase I made sometime back....

Re: What I have been doing
There's always American Pickers....j/k. When my Father passed, his house was full of stuff.Lots of stuff. The buyer wanted to get his Mother moved in quickly, and knew it would take me forever to clean the house out.So after we removed what we wanted,he took over and cleaned everything else out. Saved...

Re: How Much Beer Did You Drink Last Year?
Hey All, Some folks may think that I drink too much! I say pish posh! I drink what I think is just the correct amount. I'm the only one in the household that drinks my brews, and I don't often offer any to family. Once in awhile I 'll give one or 2 to my neighbor. I like to concoct recipes, brew them ...

Re: What are you brewing/bottling/kegging?
Hey All, bottled my #2 experiment today. Munton's Lite HME + 3.3 Breiss Golden lite LME and Belle Saison yeast. Light and fruity with not too much of anything prominent . Next experiment. Munton's Canadian HME + Breiss 3.3 Light LME and Belle yeast. Going pretty well this summer for brewing with the...

Re: What are you brewing/bottling/kegging?
RIP ! Mash, I hate to dump beer, but sometimes you just have to. You mentioned your opinion on Rauchbier. I was stationed in Bamberg while in the Army.So on a free weekend some buddies and I decided to "Eat on the Economy"(go to a civilian restaurant) for a meal. We ordered our meals,(Schni...

Re: LHBS closed
Hey All, I guess I'm pretty lucky with the availability of LHBS close to me. One is about 10-15 mins away, and 2 are about 30 miles each away from me. Another closed down last year. It belonged to SJ Porr of the challenge of the same name.It was sad. There is also an outlet store about 30 miles away ...

Re: Be glad you live in modern times.
My Father used to tell stories about living as a teen during the Depression. He said that his Uncles who lived in the city would brew their own beer.He said he didn't know what ingredients they used, but said that they just tied a cloth over the top of a 5 gallon crock and left it outside for a week o...

Re: Be glad you live in modern times.
Man, a week is a quick turn around for green beers. So ,they drank 2% beers at a week into fermentation. How long does it take from pitching to the formation of say a 2% abv.? We go for 3 weeks to get full fermentation in most cases. In essence they were consuming "grain water ",for lack of...

Re: Be glad you live in modern times.
Geez Mash, all this talk of open fermenter, bugs etc., made me remember an unpleasant experience that happened long ago. I used to drink cheap. The cheaper the better. I drank Old Reading 16oz. returnables.Cost $3.83 a case. Well one Saturday I was working in the yard, hotter than the gates of hell. SWM...

Re: Be glad you live in modern times.
Wow,imagine living in Europe in the 16-1700's. I guess beer was sometimes fermented in open vats where all kinds of bugs and vermin had access to.Wild yeast spores everywhere. The water around larger cities was probably polluted from animal and human waste. Geez, you had to brew high alcohol beers jus...

Re: Riddle me this!
Dave and Mash, looking back at the spikes in temps we have had here in S. Central Pa. that may have been a contributing factor. The ambient temp of my garage jumped up to 80ish on occasions, but having gone to the Lallemand yeast site it states that Belle Saison can operate safely from 59 to 95 degrees...

Riddle me this!
Hey All, I had a perplexing experience last weekend. I had 1st pours of 2 B/D batches using Belle Saison yeast. Everything(to my knowledge) was done exactly the same.Brewing procedures, sanitation, temperature control(both around mid to high 70's) and one tasted perfectly okay, but the other had the d...

Re: What are you brewing/bottling/kegging?
Hey All, bottled my 4 gallon experiment on brewing kit beers with saison yeast in hot weather. I used a Munton's Cerveza kit and a 3.3 Breiss light LME and Belle Saison yeast. The result was a mildly fruity beer with a nice bitter end.Nothing special, but the experiment worked.Next,Munton's American L...

Re: How much/often do you drink?
Dang Crewmates, So much exersize, watching what you eat, etc. FWIW, I drink almost every day.The one exception is the night before a Dr. appt. I like to brew beer and I like to drink beer. I also like cocktails etc.Usually whiskey and soda. I usually don't keep a tally of how many I have,BUT, I know ...
