Re: Never mind the Kit, let's do this a bit from scratch
Good to know on the gravity readings. I did notice a significant slowdown in the fermentation yesterday. Didn't get a chance to test it though, will try to today. I picked up some Red Star Montrachet Yeast to try on the next batch to see which I like better. Appreciate all the advise.

Re: Never mind the Kit, let's do this a bit from scratch
Well, can't check the gravity since my hydrometer didn't come in till yesterday. So I have no idea where it started out at. I'll just have to taste test it along the way. You are dead on about the 1118 characteristics though. It's fizzing away very nicely. I have also used sugar in the bottle for ca...

Re: Never mind the Kit, let's do this a bit from scratch
well, here's what I was thinking, and do please chime in if I'm off base. I figure I'll watch the fermentation and I'm hoping is slows down around the 2 week mark. I don't mind dry cider, it's what I prefer, but I also know that it can certainly go too dry and no one like that. If fermentation has s...

Re: First batch ever
Just very week or watered down. The fermentation never had much activity at any point which is why I let it go for so long.

Never mind the Kit, let's do this a bit from scratch
Ok, not exactly scratch. Not knocking anyone, but I just don't have the time/mental health required to press apples or any other fruit. This is as close as I'll get and I'm starting small and will work my way up. Here's what I'm trying this time. Scratch Batch: 1gal Store bought apple juice, no pres...

Re: First batch ever
So I let that batch ferment for 4-6 weeks and then I bottled and let sit till last week to cure. End result is that it has enough alcohol content that you can sorta taste it, but the overall taste is crap. I figure maybe it was an old kit, or I screwed something up in the process. Either way, I have...

Re: First batch ever
So I rolled the dice and gave it four weeks. Seems to have upped the flavor and gave it the dryness I really like. So I just finished bottling and time to give it a bit more time to rest. Though I did consume the last bottle since it wasn't quite full. I think I'm going to enjoy this hobby.

Re: Recipe: Fresh Ginger Beer
I may have to try this. I have some jamaican friends and they turned me onto ginger beer. This looks like it could be very good.

So I'm at 3 weeks and it tastes a lot better. Might bottle tonight or tomorrow. Already planning my next batch.

Re: First batch ever
Yooper - Thanks for the reply. I've continued to let it age and this coming saturday will be 3 weeks of fermentation. It's really slowed down, but I know thats to be expected. I'm going to see about bottling over the weekend and then let those sit for 3-4 weeks to age & clear. I think from there...

Re: New to the Brew
almost a full week in and I gave it a little taste test tonight. Has a good flavor, but is certainly weak/watery. So I tossed a post in the "other" section here and hopefully someone can suggest a way to punch it back up. Fermentation is slowing down and I figure that since this is my firs...

First batch ever
Hello all. So I'm in the middle of my first ever batch of homebrew and it's a BD Forbidden Fruit cider. It's been going for a week now and I can see that fermentation is slowing, I plan to leave it in there for 2 weeks though to finish and clear up. However, I figured I'd give it a little taste test...

Re: New to the Brew
24 hours In and the BDC I'd happily burping away so I'm guessing that's a good sign.
