Re: Fermentation Time
Like I always say......we can't be alcoholics as homebrewers cuz an alcoholic can't wait 7 weeks for a beer.

Re: My friend’s beer is something I really don’t like.
I think you need to be honest but tactful, which is a fine line to walk. If you don't like spiced beers, at least that provides you an out for not drinking his. But I find it difficult to believe that he thinks his beer is good and his process is okay if every bottle is a gusher and is muddy-lookin...

Re: My friend’s beer is something I really don’t like.
Banjo, man, that has to be rough. I can't stand any beer that has allspice or ginger or cloves or any of the things that go into "winter" beers. Ugh. But that's just me. Anyway, if he likes it and is having fun then I guess he's in his happy place. Just take some of your own over (if you d...

Re: Yeast Pitch Rate and Starter Calculators
Wow! That is awesome info there and exactly why I always valued this forum and its members. I going to have to read up on this becasue having great tasting brews right out of the fermenter is something I think we'd all aspire to.

Re: carbonation
Mashani's right. Without a hydrometer, the only way to know for sure that your fermentation is complete is to wait the full three weeks. Some call this the "3/4 Method" meaning 3 weeks in the fermenter and 4 weeks in bottles at room temps before chilling. I keep mine in the basement too, i...

Re: Bottling for carbonation
We're trying to avoid/reduce the acetaldehyde present in homebrew that's not conditioned long enough and gives off a flavor of green apples. It is a compound present during the formation of alcohol and, generally, indicates that your beer is too young and needs more time to condition out. If the bee...

Re: The newest of newbies
You can always use something like two row in conjunction with unmalted grains, since the two row will convert the starches in the unsalted grains (as long as you use enough two row). Excellent point, BP since 2-row pale malt should easily convert up to 50% of its own weight in unmalted grain. Some ...

Re: The newest of newbies
Welcome to the OBSESSION , Hayser! Glad to "see" another midwesterner in here. Anyway, I have recently (like really recently....as of last Tuesday) gotten back into brewing after a 2 year hiatus. I started on a MrBeer kit back in 2012 and the old timers in this forum (including me) are all...
