Re: Brew Demon infection question
Both Mr. Beer and Brewdemon have the same base instructions, i.e. putting 1 gallon of cold tap water into the fermenter, added the recently boiling wort and water mix, then topping off with cold tap water. There is zero reason to boil, then cool the tap water. If you want, sanitize a gallon jug or t...

Re: Isolation brewing
Stay safe everyone, and use common sense, if you have it . :clink: Are you saying that there's people here that don't have common sense? That's quite the thing to say. I don't believe people come here to be lectured or to be belittled. This thread is titled "Isolation Brewing " and the OP...

Re: Isolation brewing
Fortunately or unfortunately I am working as our business of material handling is considered essential to keep medical, manufacturing and the food and beverage infrastructure going, in Ohio there is NOT a stay at home order it is a social distancing order, in other words a common sense order, don't...

Re: Isolation brewing
Do you have a boat? I do in fact have a boat. It is in the garage at our cottage. Given our cottage is 80 minutes away, I will not be going there to do anything because it violates our Stay Home order, which right now goes through April 13th. Our order requires us to suspend activities that are not...

Re: Isolation brewing
Can't work on a boat at a yard here, because we have a Stay Home order. Seems like NY has the same order... I brewed in late January, then again in late February. With our Stay Home order, my LHBS (Adventures) closed to retail Monday night. Just as well, while we'll have to make a food run soon, add...

Re: Cleaning tap lines
That might be a great guide for commercial establishments. 122 pages of info is a little overload for this homebrewer!!! I've been kegging for a number of years now and the method I mentioned works great for me. Hint - Read the Table of Contents Chapter 7 - System Maintenance and Cleaning - pages 6...

Hop sale
Adventures in Homebrewing has the following hops on sale. I've noted the year of harvest when I found it:
Cascade Hops, $5.99 a pound - 2017 crop
Centennial Hops, $12.99 a pound - 2018 crop

Re: Cleaning tap lines
The Brewer's Association puts out a free Draught Beer Quality Manual . This is the bible. It discusses line cleaning, as well as faucet cleaning (yes, we had the discussion here about how a particular brand of faucet didn't need to be disassembled, and that was shown to be incorrect). Many may scof...

Re: Temperature fluctuation during fermentation
Why a secondary? The recipe I used told me too. The first time I use a recipe I follow it as closely as I can. Sometimes the temps during fermentation are out of whack, but the rest is pretty spot on. I don't really want to bottle or keg right now anyway, so I've got this one tucked away and out of...

Re: Temperature fluctuation during fermentation
The OG was 1.064 and it is now at 1.015 and I think it is finished fermenting. I racked into a secondary, but took a pull off of it to taste. It tastes fine, surprisingly. I put a little club soda in the glass for carbonation and re-tasted. It tasted great. I had 12 ounces of it right off the ferme...

Re: Greetings from Fairfax Virginia
I'm a new member and a new brewer, so I've just started learning the craft. I use a bicycle-tire inflator with CO2 cartridge to blanket my bottles and vessels when transferring, to push out oxygen, but I'm planning to get a big bottle of nitrogen to use for that purpose. I used to do HVAC work and ...

Re: Temperature fluctuation during fermentation
Wide temperature fluctuations will definitely impact the beer. This especially matters during the first few days of fermentation, when activity is at its peak. As stated, at 51 degrees the yeast is asleep, doing nothing. You should try to maintain mid 60s if possible. People do this with a temperatu...
