Re: Gotta make a sour - need some guidance

Listen to the above Brewing Network audio link. You can listen to it while you're browsing elsewhere. You'll have to sit through some middle school humor no doubt, but those guys, Jamil Zanisheff, Mike McDole, and John Plise, are all NHC gold medal winners. It's approx 55 minutes. Edit... FFWD to ab...

Brewers make wort - yeast makes beer.

THIS!!!!

Everything else blossoms out from this base fact. Everything else is fine tuning and means absolutely nothing if you don't have happy, healthy yeast.

Agreed, fun thread.

Again, geeking out is fun too. That's why we're here, right?

Re: Share your unpopular opinion

It's still fun to geek out and overthink things. You just don't NEED to. You can make really good beer without it.

Re: Share your unpopular opinion

Overthinking things is fun, but still just overthinking. --I have never done a single water adjustment of any kind. --Ballpark my brew day numbers. Rarely do I hit anything precise. --I don't do starters. --I always use a 5 gallon mash volume regardless of beer style, amount of grains, water:grain r...

Re: calculating abv

Yep, whether you bottle prime or batch prime, you'd have to recalculate your OG. My previous post was misleading.

Re: calculating abv

If you really want to know, I'd say just don't cap the last bottle. Cover it with a piece of aluminum foil and let it sit at room temp for a few days. The priming sugar should ferment out very quick and most of the CO2 will simply dissipate.

Re: calculating abv

Eh, no real need as long as you took a reading prior to bottling. Minimal change at best. Enjoy the beer and think about your next brew session instead :D

Re: Thinking about a Grainfather (Updated FYI)

I have never really looked closely at this item. Prices are normally out of a reasonable range. This one is not that bad after seeing this thread. I am interested.

Crap, it's 12. I'm starting to think I'd rather be brewing today.

Re: Who's brave enough to brew in this weekend's cold?

Well, no brewing for me tomorrow but with a high of 19°, I am running a half marathon. Let's hope the trail isn't too icy

Re: The difference yeast makes

Wyeast 1968 is one also. Feremented cool, it is a good choice for American styles being fairly clean. Warmer brings out its English strain characteristics. It can be finicky at cool temps though.

Amazing even what the same strain will do at different temps.

Re: Can Too Much Krausen Reduce Head?

It seems as though higher abv beers have lower retention. I have nothing to back that up. Just an observation. Just as higher hop conetent increases both head and retention.
