Re: Brewery suggestion for trip

Westbrook in Mt. Pleasant, outside of Charleston, is a must IMO. Big, nice modern brewery built from the ground-up ($$$) with a nice tasting room. Many excellent beers (last I knew, they also contract brew for Evil Twin Brewing). One Claw Rye Pale Ale is a great warm-weather beer. They've also gotte...

Re: Northern Brewer

They send emails offering 20% everything sitewide (with restrictions) quite a bit; I usually wait for those. They also do a lot of sales on kits (like. $20 kits for low-to-moderate ABV / IBU recipes) that are pretty good deals, but I mostly brew 3 - 4 gallon batches and prefer to build my recipes fr...

Re: 10 Easy to Avoid Mistakes Home Brewers Make

What about drinking and brewing? They go hand in hand but it would be easy to over do the drinking and have a bad day. Without mentioning any names. I know someone who forgot to pitch their yeast a few times after enjoying several brewday pints with friends. Never forgot to pitch, but I did f...

Re: Do You Drink Starters?

I've never tasted a starter, but regularly taste the hyrdometer sample when the wort goes into the fermenter. As anyone who's tried it knows, it's nothing at all like the finished beer (and not necessarily pleasant), but I find that you can sometimes learn things about the beer you've just made by c...

Re: 50 of the best new Breweries

I've had Vanished Valley from Ludlow, Massachusetts. Very good NEIPA's and a tasty chocolate milk stout, too. From a brewery that is essentially a SHED (600 sq ft) in the parking lot of a restaurant. From small things...

Re: BeerBorg User Map

It's been a looong time between bumps for this thread! To review: We have a map of BeerBorg users, for those who wish to share their location (usually to the zip code level....street address would be a bit too private, but it's up to you). For reference, the map is at: https://www.google.com/maps/@3...

Re: 50 Fastest Growing Breweries in 2017

The list is definitely skewed by the percentage factor, as RickBeer pointed out. There are four on the list from New England -- and I have heard of exactly zero of them prior to reading that list. And I consider myself fairly well-informed on local/regional breweries. :) Still, good on them for maki...

Re: Cryo hops & Beersmith

Yes, Beer-lord, the general rule of thumb with cryo hops is 2X the alpha acid by weight. What I did in BeerSmith is create a new ingredient entry for the particular cryo hop that I bought, copied over all of the original information, gave it a different name, and then just doubled the acid percentag...

Re: How much did you drink in 2017?

I brewed 25g and probably drank about 15g of that, maybe a little more. My guesstimate would be a similar amount of consumption of commercial beer. Looking at it another way, I probably have 4-5 beers per week, with occasions where there's more (summer, golf outings or neighborhood parties can yield...

Re: I really screwed up

Very coincidental, Dave - I also had a bad experience entering a beer in a competition this fall, and it just so happened to be a Cal Common, too. I was cutting it very close with my brewing schedule, needing to get the beer bottled one day and shipped the next (the judging was a couple of weeks lat...

Then various bad things happened (glass carboy explosion, divorce, etc.) Wow, yeah, those are a couple of very seriously bad things. One is emotionally scarring, and tragic...and the other involves dissolving a marriage. :thanks: :night: I'll be here all week. Don't forget to tip your bartenders an...
