Re: Spike CF5 conical fermenter
It was the first time I used this so I used 1TB in about 3 gallons of water, recirculated. I heated the water to about 165 (just the default setting on the Mash and Boil) and let it run for about 10 minutes, I think. Then I rinsed with water, and did the same process with Starsan. There was some ser...

Re: Spike CF5 conical fermenter
For those following/interested, the latest "this is cool" moment was using the clean-in-place ball. By pumping water, PBW, starsan into an attachment that sits inside the lid, I can completely clean and sanitize the conical without disassembling or moving the conical! I know some here have...

Re: Newbie Update
Opinions are going to vary, but based on what you said here's what I would do: 1) Mexican Cerveza: Since you're looking for fruit, I'd use the 1oz of Citra. 2) American Light Lager: I'd go with the 1oz of Comet. I've found that Mandarina Bavaria is pretty tame and you need a boatload of it to even n...

Re: refractometer
Another suggestion to avoid hydrometer waste and multiple samples: After you pull your hydrometer sample, continue to check that same sample. Just treat it like a mini fermenter. What I mean is, take your sample, get the reading, then remove the hydrometer from the wort/beer. Cover the tube with a ...

Re: feedback please
To mashani's point - you CAN do this, but what is your end-goal? What are you looking for in terms of color, taste, bitterness, etc.?

Re: Spike CF5 conical fermenter
Have you tried it as a wort chiller? That might push it to far unless big enough to handle that high to low temp. This might work, but I'm afraid it would be slow and inefficient on its own and blow up your glycol cooler in short order. I think you can use them in this capacity as part of a 2-stage...

Re: Spike CF5 conical fermenter
...I want to hear more on your cooler system. I think where I want to go next. I have been really liking doing more lagers lately, but need better temp control then what using now. Mine is working but know could be better and easier, Glycol............. It wasn't cheap,, but it's easy. The lid of t...

Just so everybody knows that better equipment in no way makes you smarter....
Watch this quick snippet to see what happens when you g to dump your dry hops after harvesting yeast, and forget that the conical is under pressure:

Re: What are you drinking?
Interestingly enough, when it's fresh it presents as a very different beer. Once it has a few weeks/months under it's belt it seems like regular Pliny - which is never a bad thing.
And the cans are a nice touch!

Re: Spike CF5 conical fermenter
My pump arrived and I gave it a test run with some sanitizer - all is good. This morning I dry hopped the pale ale that I'm currently fermenting and within 2 minutes of dropping them in, I could see about 1/2 of them at the bottom of the sight glass. I'm using a technique that I read about elsewhere...

Last night (or was it the night before?), it was a double dry hopped Pliny The Elder on the back deck.

Re: What are you brewing/bottling/kegging?
I'm just waiting for my Firestone Walker Pale Ale clone to finish so I can crash it, dry hop it, and carb it up. In other news, I kegged the blonde ale I brewed for the office and put together a kegerator yesterday that our office admin bought so we can have beer in the office. Took the first pour y...

Re: Spike CF5 conical fermenter
My pump arrived yesterday - one day late to use on my latest brew. I ended up using a sanitized 1/2G Pyrex container to transfer from the M&B to my conical. But I'm ready for the next one! pump jg.jpg I did a dump last night to get the trub out: Trub.jpg And now the sight glass seems to be full ...
