Re: What-up?
Pool swimming is definitely boring, but I swam on teams as a kid, so I'm used to it. There's a group open water swim that I try to do somewhat regularly so I'm ready for races, but it's a ways away, and the pool is much more convenient.

Re: What-up?
It's definitely been quiet lately. I'm still not drinking. Quitting dropped my blood pressure enough that my doctor took me off one of my medications, so I think it's permanent. I thought about brewing NA beer, but decided it was too much work. On the non brewing front, I did another triathlon today...

Re: Now I haz a sad
Anchor is the oldest craft beer company in America. They trademarked "Steam Beer" That's why the style is officially called California Common. I wonder if Steam Beer will become a description instead of a name brand now. I have some relatives in the bay area. I might have to see if they ca...

Re: First Brew Question
There's not really a "right" answer for what the final reading should be. What's important is that it doesn't change when you take two reasons a couple of days apart. With a small batch, it's tempting to pour the hydrometer sample back in so you don't lose it, but I advise against that bec...

Re: First Brew Question
Presence of bubbles in the airlock is a sign that fermentation is happening, but absence of bubbles doesn't always mean an absence of fermentation. You should see a layer of dead yeast, hops, etc forming on the bottom of the fermenter. This is called trub (rhymes with rube). That tells you that some...

Re: What are you brewing/bottling/kegging?
It is going to come with a bunch of leaf hops. If I remember correctly, they are mash hops You're probably already aware of this, but just in case you forgot, if you make dog biscuits with your spent grains, Don't do it with grains that had hops in the mash, since hops can be deadly for dogs (some ...

Re: Fake beer
1. Yes and no. UME is unhopped malt extract. Booster it's a mixture od fermentable and unremarkable sugars. Both will add alcohol, but UME will also add body, flavor, and mouthfeel. IMO, UME is more of an upgrade than a replacement. 2. I haven't made one of these kits in a long time, but I thought t...

Re: NA Beer ideas
Another post reminded me of this, so I thought I"d circle back. I ended up not making NA beer. Even though i've retired, I don't seem to have a lot of free time, so I haven't been brewing (especially not when I'd need to take extra steps to remove the alcohol).

Re: Fake beer
Welcome! I posted about this recently: http://www.beerborg.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=109741#p109741 The usual way to make NA (Non Alcohol) beer is to make a regular batch, then heat the wort to 175° F for 15 minutes to drive off the alcohol. After doing that, if you're kegging, you proceed as usual....
