Re: South Carolina!

Anyone who is still active on the Borg in South Carolina? Seems like the last posts from most of the above members were many years ago. I moved to the Charleston area recently. Enjoying the local breweries (although I arrive spoiled by previously living in MA, with relatively-easy access to Tree Hou...

Re: Brewing Bloopers

Nothing too out of the ordinary, here. Once or twice, I've poured liquid (sanitizer, wort, or fermented beer) into a vessel with a spigot, without first making sure the spigot was closed. Luckily, I caught the mistake before sending any more than 6-10 ounces onto the floor. :? Probably the best one ...

Re: Soliciting opinions on yeast starter

That is the yeast calculator I use and I would also pitch that much. I use the Pro Brewer pitch rates (1.0 typically as I rarely brew high gravity) for Ales as well. It lets me drink it sooner without tasting acetaldehyde (I am a super taster of that stuff). mashani, I recall you making a post on t...

Re: R.I.P. Tasty McDole

Tasty sure was respected in the community, no question. Very accomplished homebrewer (former Sam Adams Longshot winner, who has done collabs with countless pros over the years), yet without a lick of ego apparent in his podcast appearances. I had the same thought when I heard the news -- I've never ...

Re: Soliciting opinions on yeast starter

Generally, I agree w/ Beer-lord. I, personally, have used starters for 3-gallon lagers. But, I prefer to pitch more cells than the average brewer, I think. As Beer-lord said, it mostly depends on the OG, and the number of viable cells you're starting with. This is where a pitch rate calculator makes...

Re: Warm or cold pitch?

I am inclined to second mashani on this topic, but will put an asterisk next to my agreement, for the time being. I've always strived to chill to at/below desired ferm temps, but having recently moved from the chillier Northeast to the much-warmer Southeast, I've been dealing with groundwater temps ...

Re: Eight years ago today...

Thanks for posting this. It reminded me to check my records, and it turns out my "nine year anniversary" will be this Sunday (Jan 5, 2011). Mr. Beer West Coast Pale Ale with Booster and 12 oz of honey. I cracked open the first bottle just before kickoff of the Super Bowl (Feb 6, 2011). It ...

Did you compare born-on dates between the singles and the pricier six-pack? That's the only thing that might logically explain the situation.

Re: Homebrewcon 2019 - Providence

Well, crap, I didn't realize that Homebrewcon is basically an all-or-nothing registration. I was thinking/hoping that you could pay "a la carte" for certain days, or even more granular than that, but on the website it looks like you sign up for the whole three-day event, or not at all. Tha...

Re: Question on cost per batch

Thanks, mashani. I should have clarified that lately I've been making lagers (due to ambient temps), which require more cells, and that's why I've got two packs of dry yeast on the forefront of my brain. For most ale batches, I do tend to use one pack of SafeAle US-05 as a go-to for my 2.5-gallon ba...

Re: Question on cost per batch

Interesting to see so many under-5-gallon brewers on this forum. I brew either 2.5-gallon or 4-gallon batches (even some 1-gallon stovetop experiments) and thought I was way outside the norm, but apparently not. FWIW, I've been averaging about $30 for a 2.5-gallon batch lately. Much of that is due t...
