Still not clear in the keg yet and I don't know why. The aroma is a tropical smorgasbord! It's tastes great but there's a tiny after taste that I can't put my finger on. Maybe a tad green????
Still, a great beer for me though I've not hit nirvana.

Re: Pliny the Elder
Paul, I ask this in all seriousness: Are you sure you aren't picking up on something that isn't there because you are looking for flaws in your own beers?
I've learned that I am hyper-critical of my own beers and I'd be willing to bet if I took your bottle, recapped it and sent it back to you claiming it was mine that you would think it was outstanding.
Hmmm, there's an idea.....

Re: Pliny the Elder
Yes, no, yes, no, maybe. No, no, yes, no, yes, yes. I don't know! I am picky but I really think it's that I just don't like ice cold homebrew much. I like the aromas a cold head gives off but I find that cold brew hides flavors and/or contorts them. After about 10 minutes (geologic time for homebrewers) I enjoy the flavors much more. Actually, I like this Pliny best the last 2 or 3 mouthfuls when its much warmer than many would like it.
I'm a sicko and can't be helped.

Re: Pliny the Elder
I agree with you. I've set my beer fridge (for bottles) at around 43 and I keep my kegerator at 40. Both are a little lower (colder) than I prefer but I also keep sodas and drinks for the wife and kid in the beer fridge so a little cold is OK. I just let the beer sit in the glass for a while before drinking. With the keg, I don't want to raise the temp any more because I'd have to kick up the PSI to balance it, then have longer lines to balance that, etc.
But, I can't complain either. Hell, I have beer on tap at home....it can't be all bad, right?
I was out the other night and ordered a Lagunitas IPA with dinner and it came COLD. It wasn't a frozen glass, but I swear the beer was close to freezing. I let it sit for at least 20 minutes before drinking it because the first few sips almost made it bland.

Re: Pliny the Elder
Pliny. Paul, did you bottle this from the keg? Reason I ask...it's got a low carb to it. And it looks like the one you poured from the keg was carbed right. Other than the low carb, it's really, really, really good. Mine was a little cloudy too, but that's to be expected with all those dry hops in it, so that didn't really matter to me. The aroma was awesome. And the flavor was great too. You mentioned that you got some weird aftertaste, well, I didn't get it at all. Well brewed my friend!!!
Other than the low carb, you hit this one really good. And judging by your pour vs my pour, that is a minor issue. Either it lost carb in the keg to bottle transfer, or I didn't let it sit at room temp to finish as long as I should have.

Re: Pliny the Elder
I did bottle from the keg and the one's I sent to my friends in California seemed to be carbed properly. I wonder if it's a cap issue in shipping or just wasn't crimped right. Guess we'll never know and sorry about that.
Oddly, the beer gun has been working well.
My keg is still a bit cloudy too but I think, for me, after it warms up it's pretty good. I'm not blown away by it but hey, there's no fusels so I've got that going for me.

Re: Pliny the Elder
I had this last night after having a GoTo IPA to start the night - it seemed fitting to go bigger.
The carb on my bottle was good, not quite as much as your pic Paul, but not as low as Chris' either. Call it a tweener, but it was the level I expected for the style.
There's not a lot left for me to say that hasn't been said already in this thread so I'll just dog pile on and say that this is excellent. In yo' face aroma and a hefty mouthfeel and bitterness that follows. I'm not sure what else you could do to make it better because this is a beer to be proud of, sir.
Sorry, no pic - that's my bad. Next round is on me.

Re: Pliny the Elder
Beautiful golden amber hue colored liquid poured into my glass and piney dank aroma hit my nose. (Pardon me while I take a moment on the recall) Ok I'm back. After my first bitter malty sip I realized what had happened, Paul had sent my own beer back to me.
Really though, you did a wonderful job with this one. You mashed at a good temperature as evidence by the good mouth feel and dry finish. You pitched enough yeast to get the job done and fermented at a good steady temperature, as evidence by no off flavors noted. Great hop aroma followed by hop bitterness with just enough malt to keep it right. You knocked this one out of the park. Keep this sh*t up and I'm going to loose my king of the hill status. But with beer this good, I'll gladly give it up. The carb level on mine was right where I thought it should be.

The keg kicked last night and I wasn't too happy with the end taste of this one. But, I'm glad you liked it. High praise from the King of the Pliny. It was nowhere near as good as yours. I really think yours was better than the real thing but I better watch out because Vinnie might be watching. Muchos gracias!
Watch it, you can barely see the bottle opener.

Looks like something the wino's drink out of in my area.
I've seen the Craigtube guy use one of those with much luck. Pretty simple stuff considering it's all recyclable except the CO2.
