Steam Whistle Brewing came highly recommended from a number of people I had asked while there and after my work duties were done my wife and I checked the place out.
The first think I noticed was the street I parked on. How could this NOT go well, right?
It's right in the Entertainment District of Toronto and the location is an old railroad roundhouse (for turning engines around).
I was a bit disappointed upon entering to find out that they only brew one beer - and that it was a pilsner, which isn't my favorite style. Typically I find the earthy notes of noble hops to not be to my liking, but in this case I figured, "when in Rome...".
I have to say that it looked really appealing and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. The aroma was heavily bread-y with no sulphur noticeable at all. The taste was clean, light, bright, crisp and everything that you would want from a pilsner - without a heavy earthy influence from the hops.
We noticed a few people getting pretzels from a counter so we checked out the food options and they had Finnish meat pies so we ordered a couple of those to pair with the beer and it was fantastic! The dough was more doughnut than crust and the slight saltiness of the meat made the beer even better.
For not counting myself as a pilsner fan, I was really impressed with this beer. I'd definitely go back for the experience and the beer and would definitely recommend this place to anybody that finds themselves in the area.
