Not sure when this started but both NB and Midwest are now shipping sacks of grain for free? Their prices are about the same as my LHBS (which may be closing next year),
Seeing how I paid tons of money to ship Mecca Grade and NB sells Mecca malts, should my LHBS close, I'll be good.
I know some won't shop these places because of their owners and I try not to but in the end, I need to brew beer.

That was you over there.
Re: Northern Brewer and Midwest ship sacks free
Yep, I've not been on NB's website for many months but I did check bulk grain with them over the summer and got an estimate for shipping sacks and it was about $40 to me. It does appear the price of the Rahr 2 row went up about $5 since then but I do know from my UPS contacts that UPS gives very good discounts to mega shippers so maybe NB and Midwest's purchase by Ab has allowed them to get these extra discounts.

It's useful if my HBS closes.
Making beer and stew for the Zombie Apocalypse.
Never mind, there it is.

Hell, this could be useful if my LHBS stays open!!!!. My store sells all grain for 1.49 per pound if you buy 10 or more pounds, it's 1.99 per pound under 10 pounds. That's fine if it's a specialty malt, but I'm getting hosed on 2 row. Might just need to invest in some storage bins!!John Sand wrote:It's useful if my HBS closes.
I would save about $20 on 50 lbs of Briess 2 Row. Shipping is the main reason why I've never ordered in bulk on line.

So even if you bought a full sack at your LHBS, they don't discount it further? 50 lbs gets you the same discount as 10 lbs?

YUP...bogus isn't it? I do have another shop in town that doesn't do a blanket rate on grain. But they are a little further and don't stock as many (type and quantity) of hops, so I don't go there much.Beer-lord wrote:So even if you bought a full sack at your LHBS, they don't discount it further? 50 lbs gets you the same discount as 10 lbs?

Just an FYI, for folks willing to go outside the 2 row box a bit and use stuff from Finland (Viking malts) you can some types of 2 row or pilsner from MoreBeer in 10# bags for something like $1.09#, and those ship free if you buy $59 worth of stuff. You can get 50# sacks of the stuff for about $37, but they don't ship free still, I don't know how much they charge to ship sacks. Since I don't have a mill I just buy 10# bags pre-crushed.BlackDuck wrote:Hell, this could be useful if my LHBS stays open!!!!. It makes good beer, I know because I've used it in pretty much everything for the last 4 months.
