Read the whole article here. The week before the Super Bowl, Samuel Adams released a special one-off beer called Too Old, Too Slow, Still Here. To Boston-area sports fans, the name was a nod to the New England Patriots’ 41-year-old star quarterback Tom Brady. To craft beer fans, however, it seemed the venerable 35-year-old brewery was inadvertently—as the kids say—owning themselves.
In a Beer Advocate thread announcing the farmhouse IPA’s release, posters used the beer’s evocative name as an excuse to taunt Sam Adams for how stodgy and bland they had become compared to today’s cutting edge upstarts. While Reddit rapscallions merely mocked the brewery, with jabs like: “Sam [Adams] has a place. Like when you go to a steakhouse and your only options are Boston Lager and...Miller, Bud, and Coors.”

Don't disrespect your elders.
Good read. What do you think?

I respect SA for what they are and what they did. Personally, I stopped buying them when everything out of the sample pack tasted too similar for me.
But I agree with the sentiment of the article - respect your elders! (And get off my lawn!)

I actually like Boston Lager, but I liked it a lot more 20 years ago then I do now. 20 years ago it seemed to have more of a floral lovely hop aroma then it does now. It may just be that I'm old and my nose doesn't work so well anymore, or was ruined by Pliney the sucky (read the article).
Re: Don't disrespect your elders.
Boston Beer (Sam Adams) and Sierra Nevada practically invented the craft beer scene.
And they were my introduction to beers other than BMC ( once I started brewing).
But I think they've both fallen behind the curve in the past few years. I still look at their beers but I'm much more likely to choose something local.

I guess I should've read the article first.bpgreen wrote:Boston Beer (Sam Adams) and Sierra Nevada practically invented the craft beer scene.

I read the article. Yeah, hipsters and beer snobs are always looking for the next greatest thing, and sometimes the next weirdest. But, if you don't keep up in retail business, you fall behind. Sam Adams has become like BMC: consistent, reliable, large. It definitely tastes better, but I too place it as the best alternative to megabeer. That's not disrespectful, it's true, and I'm older than Tom Brady, the author, or Sam Adams beer. Sierra Nevada too has become a big company with a well known but uninspiring product. No hate here, but I'm not buying either when there are better choices made fresh where I live. What was a little amusing is that the author, all of 42, was basically writing "You damn kids today have no respect"
Making beer and stew for the Zombie Apocalypse.
Never mind, there it is.

Re: Don't disrespect your elders.
Good article. It seems like today everyone is in the 'what have you done for me lately' crowd. Those who can't wait for the next thing after just getting the next thing moments earlier.
Craft beer consumption is down and in a downward trend. That is a fact and those under the age of Brady (like he's old!) aren't drinking beer much anymore. In fact, they are staying away from alcohol.
I respect my elders! We can learn a lot from them.
