Should I dry hop an India Pale Lager
Never done a true IPL before. Did a dark, lager beer and dry hopped it and it's delish but the dark malts help. I'm concerned that my recipe is already hoppy and adding dry hops might this cleaner beer a bit grassy or take away from the delicate balance. No experience whatsoever and there's arguments for dry hopping and not all over the net.
What's your experience with IPL's?

Done it both ways, liked it both ways, it just depends on what your after. The aromas and flavors will potentially stand out a bit more then if you had used an ale yeast, or more "malty" malts, as there isn't as much to "soften" them, so if you don't want any "grassy" flavors then make sure you dry hop with hops that don't normally give you that.
Other then that RDWHAHB, just do what you like.

Re: Should I dry hop an India Pale Lager
Thanks. I think I'll forego the dry hops though I do have lots of hop hash that might work but for my first try at this style, I'll let it roll.
My recipe is simple, 91% pils malt, 6% vienna and 3% carahell. So it's a lighter version of this style. Next time I may try it with 2 row and then do the dry hop thingy.

Should you use MORE hops. Who are you and what have you done with Beer-lord?

I made an IPL a year or two ago and I’m pretty sure I dry hopped it. I can’t find the recipe though. But I’m almost positive I dry hopped. I’m mean, why wouldn’t I?

Re: Should I dry hop an India Pale Lager
It'll work but the thoughts I've read when using all Pilsner malt is that too many hops, even late addition and dry hops, could, may, might, WTF knows, cause grassiness. I'm using Cascade and Centennial only and they don't usually give that off but I figure I'll try it both ways. No dry hops now and some the next time. Or, in 2 weeks, I could change my mind.
Beer-lord is still alive and well and has to brew hard and heavy to reduce my hop load. I purchased too many 2019 hops and have to get thru my older ones first. Or open up my own retail store!

I'm probably showing my age and/or geekiness here, but when I see "IPL" my first thought is that I hope everything starts in the right order.

I've done my IPL a few times now - and BlackDuck's *might* be recipe I sent him......and it definitely had a dry hop. Amarillo, Simcoe and Nelson Sauvin.
It was CRYSTAL clear and clean...so no issues with haze nor off-flavors.

First time I ever say it, the same thing. I grew up coding an IBM 360 with punch cards. I was once a JCL wiz. I've seen all the things.Beer-lord wrote:I thought that years back when I first saw that abbreviation as well. Kealia ... I think you’re right. Now that you mention it, I think the IPL I did was your recipe.

Re: Should I dry hop an India Pale Lager
Well, I have so many hops to use up and since I have Cascade and Centennial in here and have a pack of Comet Hop Hash, I might use a small amount of it tonite before fermentation is completely over. It's very concentrated and perfect for dry hopping so you've talked me into it.

That didn't much convincing
Re: Should I dry hop an India Pale Lager
If comes to more hops, it usually doesn’t take much.
