Flavor in beer

Yes BrewDemon and Mr. Beer kits are pretty darn easy but sometime you need a little help from the Borg to get you on the right track. Post your questions here!

Flavor in beer

Post by clay5769 »

Hi
If I want to add say some flavor like honey or citrus grapefruit orange etc to my beer how would I do that?

I use brewdemon kits and there mixes I'm not brewing from scratch.

Thanks Clayton

There are a few ways. The simplest is to use extracts, as you might in baking. You can add these in the fermenter or the bottle. The advantage at bottling is that you can vary the amounts to see what works. In some cases grains or hops can provide some of the flavors you seek. You could steep some honey malt before adding your extract. Some hops have a citrus flavor, those could be added in the kettle or fermenter. You can also use the actual substance to the boil or fermenter. Some fruits will ferment out almost completely, honey too. You also have to be careful about the risk of infection.
This is a short summary, but you get the idea. You can probably find some articles online, or good brewing books that include more detail. I also suggest searching recipes with those flavors for their methods. Good luck, keep us posted.

Never mind, there it is.
