Digital BYO subscription

Post by Kealia »

Does anybody else have a digital subscription? I changed mine to digital back in March when I renewed and it's pretty crappy. I use a Nexus 7 tablet (Android for anybody who might not know) and the formatting sucks. They didn't change the format so that articles and pictures size accordingly. There's a lot of pinching and zooming and scrolling that needs to be done. Basically, it's like they scanned the hard copy in but didn't really make it mobile friendly using any kind of responsive design (somewhat of an industry term for anybody that knows coding).

Wondering if it's just me, or if anybody else using any size/OS tablet has the same complaint. :x

I don't subscribe either, but the non-subscription articles that I can access seem fine on my iPad.

My digital access to Zymurgy however, not so much...

Sounds like a lot of the same issues you're having Ron, except it's Zymurgy / iPad for me...

Well at least we know why the cats are hairless now.....

I'm betting that Zymurgy and BYO use the same publisher. I'm just shocked that they offer a digital subscription that is so poorly formatted.

Yes, I have a digital subscription. I read it on my iPhone and yes, the iOs version formatting sucks also. It is almost identical to Overdrive Media Console (thanks Adobe) controls. It sure is handy though! For readability, on iOs, you can tap on an article link to the text only version, and read it like a regular e-book. I do all my posts here on my phone while commuting by bus or train, and same with reading BYO magazine.

-Edit: just checked my memory of the formatting... It is NOT the same as the Overdrive controls.

my wife would probably like me to make an apple cider, but something akin to angry orchard's crisp cider.

Too bad online is not better than what you say. I guess I'll just keep on buying it from my LHBS's newsstand when it catches my eye, and subscribe to Zymurgy.

They have a dual-format deal where you can get print and digital for $5 above the print cost -- I was thinking of switching to that, but it sounds like I might want to re-think that. Thanks for the helpful & timely insights.

The online versions act the way they do because they are PDF files. So far I have not seen a decent PDF reader for android operating systems yet.

I have no problem with the clarity of them nor the linking to the site for articles, etc. I wouldn't have expected them to just PDF the files. Blech.
