Hombrew Alley 2025

Post by FedoraDave »

I'm not sure why, but my annual go-to competition has been moved again. It used to be held in February, but a couple of snowy incidents probably made them change their minds, and last year it was held mid-April. This year's competition will be the first weekend in May. Again, I'm not sure why, but I only caught the announcement on the BJCP website last night.

So I'm registered, and I'm entering two German-style lagers. One, my first attempt at a schwarzbier, which I think conforms pretty well to the style guidelines. Good thing I set aside a couple of bottles specifically for the competition, because that keg ran dry a while ago.

The second is a helles bock, which I conditioned in the bottles, and they've been lagering for a couple of months. I don't know how mature they are, but I figured I've got nothing to lose by entering it.

So wish me luck. I'll post the results in May, as soon as I find out.

I know from helping with a couple of local competitions that there are several factors such as availability of location needed for judging, conflicts with other beer/homebrewing related events, availability of judges and stewards. We've had to move around one competition quite a few times.

So this past Saturday, I drove down to Brooklyn, where the competition is being held, and dropped off my two entries. I also hung around and had some of their beer, focusing on their Helles, since one of my entries is also a Helles, and I thought I might compare them. Mine's a little sweeter in the finish, as I recall, but it may condition out, since the last time I tried it was perhaps a good three or four weeks ago, and the competition isn't until the first weekend in May.

And then I drove up to Citi Field and watched the Mets shut out the Cardinals.

A pretty good way to spend a Saturday, actually.

I got confirmation that my entries have been received, so everything is "go" for Saturday's judging session. There are 219 entries overall. I'll be interested in seeing how many entries are in my two categories.

I'll update with results as soon as I know them; probably Sunday or Monday.
