I haven't had any of those. Guess I know what my next beer shopping list will be though.

Looks to me like there are a handful of connoisseurs with enough money to travel the world and taste one of a kind beers and then post/boast on Rate Beer. I mean really some Trappist monks sell a few bottles at the door and the Rate Beer top experts were there that day? Just sayin'

Yeah, to each his own. I haven't tried any of them, I'm not sure I want to. I do know guys who go crazy for rare beers, paying high prices for them. My local distributor has a vast variety, including some rare brews. He'll point out a champagne style bottle on the counter, and tell me it's $30. I always decline.

I had a buddy once who told me about some rare beer they had at Old Chicago. He was telling me about the limited amount of the stuff that was brewed. Then told me what he paid for a pint of it. My response was "if you ever want to try some beer from the only 5 gallon batch of it anywhere in the world, c'mon over

Wisest words I've ever heard. As nice as it is to try new craft beers, there will never be anything like what I brew at home available anywhere except at my home.

FYI:

St. Bernardus Abt 12 is basically the same beer as Westvleteren 12, except brewed with a slightly different yeast strain. And you an actually find it in stores instead of having to go to Belgium. St. Bernardus actually was contracted to brew the Westvleteren some time back to make it more commercial, but then Westvleteren decided they didn't want to be commercial, so the St. Bernardus version became the commercial "fork" of that beer. But the base recipe is common to both.

You can get really close to this beer using nothing but Pilsner with a little bit of Munich, D-180L candi syrup, and WLP530/Wyeast 3787. The touch of Munich is to give you some extra maltyness that comes from a decoction mash of Pilsner. You could use a little bit of aromatic malt instead but all that is basically a more potent type of Munich, so I personally just use a bit more Munich.

Hmm, didn't know that about the St. Bernardus 12. Although, I should have suspected some similarity because of the name. I've seen St. B here many times so I think I'll have to try it now to get a feel for what so many people call the best beer in the world.
