Hop Spiders

Post by Wings_Fan_In_KC »

I finally got off my ass and made my hop spider. Been wanting to do this for at least 6 months but kept putting it off. It's getting used this weekend!!

Clyde (YankeeDag) pointed me to this article on BYO quite some time ago: http://byo.com/build-it-yourself/item/2 ... r-projects

Aside from the parts list, I didn't use the article at all since I'd seen a hop spider before and knew what to do to assemble it.

Here's the finished product:

Very nice! This was something that was on my list of things to do as well, but I've just been using the paint strainer bag over the opening of the LBK or the bigger 5 gallon bag over my bucket fermenter to catch all of the hops and break material. It has been working pretty well! Still might do this one day, though.

Nice! It's on my to-do list, might be sooner than later. Going commando is getting to be a pain in the hops.

Would this be doable with cheesecloth? I've got just about everything needed already minus the paint straining bag but I do have cheesecloth. Would like to through it together without having to make a trip to the store.

I've really enjoyed using my hop spider since putting it together. The only issue I've had with it is the amount of wort that gets trapped inside when using a large amount of hops.

Rick...I completely agree with this. I used mine once with a lot of hops and it seemed like it completely clogged up the bag trapping only a little wort and a lot of hop stuff in. And I think it affected the final product too, as it was not as nearly as bitter as I thought/expected it to be.

Ive had the clogging as well when going cuckoo crazy with hop bombs and have since moved to my BIAB bag weighed down with a few marbles. Still love it for the more conventional styles.

I'm still doing 2.4 gallon batches and don't think my hop schedules will clog this up.

We'll see this weekend....and thanks for the heads up.
