"My Best Story: berryman"

Post by berryman »

Ok folks this is a long one but here goes......
One Friday morning last Feb. I went to climb in my jeep as I always do and the pipe running board was black iced, its a good step up anyways.
Image
My legs went out from under me and I landed on my back in the door opening, My back was hurting the rest of the day. That night I took my wife and daughter up to Buffalo because my daughter just had a premature baby and the wife was going to stay up with her for the weekend, back hurt the whole time I drove, but kept thinking what a great brew weekend I will have with nobody around. Saturday morning I was up early and ready to brew, Had 3 five gal brews planed, extracts with steeps and hop boils.
Image
brewing was doing good, one of those days where everything is coming out right. Drank a few beers
Image
called the wife on the phone
Image
to see how things were going there.
Just then a couple neighbours stopped in and wanted to know if I needed help.
Image
I told them no thanks and they had a quick beer and left. Now everything is going good to this point finished a few beers
Image
and doing my last batch, a Belgium triple that I had been wanting to brew for a long time, almost $50.00 with White Labs yeast, everything went great, I like to put my wort in my bottling bucket and freefall it into my carboy, I get good aeration that way.
Image
I pitched the yeast and picked up the 6.5 glass carboy to carry it over to my darkroom and my brew cabinet.
Image
When I do Ales I just put the carboy on top for easier transferring, I carried it over and then my back stated to hurt, so I sat it down and straightend up for a min. then bent down and picked it up, all of a sudden it felt like I was stabbed though my back with a sword and I dropped it. Thousands of pieces of glass and beer all over my floor. I just looked at it and went up to bed. the next day I cleaned up the mess.
A good brew day turn bad.

some parts of this story might be fiction or I could have been dreaming. I'll see what I can do :)

I don't think I could find it in myself to turn down the neighbors assistance.

But it does suck to hear about the beer and your back.

The only part that is fiction is the neighbors didn't stop, I think they were out of town, maybe in Germany. :clink:

I don't remember this story, Berry. I know I'd have remembered such a tragic loss.

Anyway, this is why I bought Better Bottles when I upgraded to the five-gallon batches. I've dropped them a couple of times (never when full, though). And every time they bounce and roll across my basement's cement slab, I am reminded of my foresight in getting plastic carboys.
