I don't want to put off my likelihood of trying a sour again anytime soon based on 1 beer but man, I think I've answered my own question on whether I am interested in sours................I am not!
I split the bomber between 4 people and couldn't find enough enjoyment in this beer to finish my small amount. In fact, none of the 4 of us had anything great to say about it but that it smelled great. However, we are all serious hop heads and though we enjoy many other styles, I won't be spending $15 a bomber on anything like this again.
I wish I could really review it but it wouldn't be fair as I didn't take enough sips to be totally fair. I'm sure it's very much to style but it is most definitely not a style I think I could ever get use to.

I just don't call that beer. I'm trying to be both diplomatic and open here but I just cannot call that beer. It had only the beer quality of a carbonation to me and sour doesn't quite describe it.
I doubt that New Belgium is selling a lot of these and return buyers are likely NOT buying seconds. Again, I'm not trying to be ugly here but that tasted like it went bad to me.
Now, a few half pints later that Black IPA you made and followed by Stone's Enjoy By? Now dat's Beer.

Try a good Flemish Red or a Berliner Weiss before you judge all sours.

I'm with Dave on this. 6 months ago I would have told you to stuff your sours. Now I have had some good Lambic, Reds and Gueuze. I've started to enjoy them so much, I will be brewing one soon.mashani wrote:Try a good Flemish Red or a Berliner Weiss before you judge all sours.
I found this list on HBT for people just starting sours. It has worked for me.

Just to throw this out there. My non drinking wife loves Lindemans Kriek Lambic, Black Cherry and Apple and will drink a bottle by herself (over 2-3 days of course).

A lot of the lighter bodied sours are especially good on a hot day as a lawnmower beer. A Berliner is very refreshing. I think the whole concept of squeezing lemon into a hefe came from folks missing the sour of a Berliner on a hot day.

Mmm... sours... my Flanders Red is coming up on about a year in the fermenter. Ahem... for a good inexpensive Flanders/Flemish Red, try Rodenbach Classic, Duchesse De Bourgogne, or Monk's Cafe. Very tasty beers, and not too pricy - usually $8-10 for a 750ml bottle.

I tasted my first Sour earlier this year and really fell in love with the style. My first taste was Temptation by Russian River Brewing Company, on tap. It was so damn good. So i started looking for sours and found some pretty good ones. Sour in the Rye by The Bruery is really good. The Stony Brook Red by Sam Adams is decent, Flemish Red "Marea Roja" by Cismontane was pretty good. And a couple more I had during tastings that I can't recall the name of.
I have a sour pumpkin beer that I am really looking forward to cracking open, I'm debating if that should be the beer I kick back and watch horror movies with on Halloween.
I really look forward to exploring this style and its variations more.
