So I was ordering some ingredients for my next beer and seeing as I hate my LHBS, I order online. I ordered a few pounds of dme, steeping grains, some zythos hops, and some cascade hops.
I was super excited because the box finally came today. But when I opened it, all supplies here right except instead of cascade they sent UK east kent goldings.
Seems like more hassle than its worth just to send back 1 oz of hops and I figured I could just use the zythos for the recipe I had in mind.
My question is, can anybody tell me a little bit about these UK east kent goldings? From what I can gather, they are mostly used for aroma/dry hopping. They are described as having a earthy/spicey flavor and aroma. Can anyone elaborate on this? And lastly they are used quite often in English Ales. I'm not real big on English Ales, can anybody make suggestions on how to use these and/or possibly other styles they work in?

You can use them as a finishing hop in just about anything, and they are almost impossible to overhop with.
If you are intending on making an IPA I'd just blend them in with your other flavor/aroma hops. Sam Adams Latitude 48 has EKG in it.

That's funny. I'm trying to find EK Goldings.
I just placed an order from Northern Brewers and a message came up that EKG is out of stock.
What popped up as a replacement was Citra. I see that Citra has a much higher alpha acid number that EKG. I don't think I'll be using Citra as a sub for East kent .

Mashani - Thanks for the response, didn't get to brew this weekend after all. Think I'll just follow your suggestion and blend them in the original recipe.
Banjo-guy - Well I ordered all my stuff from Northern Brewers so I suggest ordering some Cascade Hops and maybe you'll be like me and get EKG

I do hope you let them know about the mistake. I've had excellent success with dealers replacing the wrong item.

I agree with this. Chances are they will send you the hops you ordered with no return.John Sand wrote:I do hope you let them know about the mistake. I've had excellent success with dealers replacing the wrong item.
