Tough week to be the Bassett
So Monday morning a slight food disagreement between Conan (Bassett) and Killian (Leopard Hound, named after a road, not the beer). No bigge, it happens about once a year, for what ever reason, the rest of the time they eat side by side. Check Conan out and he has a puncture on the inner part of his right upper lip. Heck, he may have bit his own lip.
Wednesday they both go to the vet for teeth cleaning. Well the Bassett had to have 2 teeth removed. One right side center upper, the other right side lower back. So he's a pretty drunk acting Bassett when I picked him up.
Thursday night he's back to his old self and ready to go for a walk. Face is a little puffy, but not to bad.
Yesterday morning I feed them and notice that the right side of his face is a little more swollen. I call my wife from work and ask her to check on him. Well by the time I'd seen him to the time she got up he was much more swollen. She takes him up to the vet just to make sure all is ok.
They check him out, shave his right upper lip and find Copperhead bite marks. Like I said, Tough week to be the Bassett. Not to worry, he is fine and went for his mile walk when I got home from work. Swelling is going down this morning. During all this he has just taken it in stride. We don't call him "The silly Bassett" for nothing.

Not the kind of snakebites I remember recieving back in the day.... Tough dog, survival of the fittest...
Re: Tough week to be the Bassett
Jeff...glad he's doing OK. I would have guessed a copperhead bite would have done more damage. And like Brewbirds hinted....I hope that snake isn't in or around the house.

Probably still in the backyard. Care to come find it?Brewbirds wrote:Ummm Inkleg...where's the snake?
We find 1 or 2 a year, catch and relocate to a large wooded area near by. Some folks say we're crazy, we just say we're "Southern". I grew up with a healthy respect for poisonous snakes. So PROPER handling is no big deal. At least we have Copperheads, not the Rattles snakes that you guys have.

Re: Tough week to be the Bassett
yeah we have rattle snakes here and I have a snake fence installed to prove it.
We didn't think about creating a snake motel when we put the rock wall up.
You can see by the 40 gallon rain barrel top, left that these are VERY big rocks which meant VERY many nice dry holes to curl up in.

Re: Tough week to be the Bassett
If I lived where there were rattlesnakes or copperheads, I'd get me a goat.
Re: Tough week to be the Bassett
yep... them were the snakebite days for me. Just a 18 year olds fad drink.... moved on.... quickly....
Re: Tough week to be the Bassett
I am really sorry to hear about your dog's bad week. As much as I fret about Ralph I can imagine what this put you through as well.

Finally! An animal picture from the Inked-One and it's not licking it's butt nor is he naked in the shower with it.
Sorry to hear about your dog's run of bad luck but happy to hear he's doing well.

Things men have made with wakened hands, and put soft life into
Are awake through years with transferred touch and go on glowing
For long years.
And for this reason some old things are lovely
Warm still with the life of forgotten men who made them.

Thanks, he's in the other room this morning rolling on the carpet making all kinds of happy/satisfied "it's good to be the Bassett" groaning noises.Chuck N wrote:Sorry to hear about your dog's run of bad luck but happy to hear he's doing well.

Glad to hear it. Never like to see the furry kids in distress.
