Our Hop Stoopid collaboration.
The Animal (Ssorck) and I have decided to brew a Hop Stoopid clone for our collaboration brew. We have each decided to do a few things different, this is my recipe interpretation, based off the 5g recipe Langunitas posted.
Recipe hop stoopid Style Generic Ale
Brewer Carcharodon Brewing Batch 2.25 gal
Extract
Recipe Characteristics
Recipe Gravity 1.085 OG Estimated FG 1.021 FG
Recipe Bitterness 105 IBU Alcohol by Volume 8.2%
Recipe Color 7° SRM Alcohol by Weight 6.5%
Ingredients
Quantity Grain Type Use
4.25 lb Briess DME - Golden Light Extract Extract
0.25 lb Victory Malt Grain Steeped
Quantity Hop Type Time
0.60 oz Nugget - Bittering hop spicy-herbal Pellet 90 minutes
0.25 oz Hop shot Pellet 60 minutes
0.25 oz Chinook - Spicy, piney flavor with high alpha, used for bittering and late additions in American ales Pellet 12 minutes
0.25 oz Cascade (Argentine) - Pleasant aroma with slight herbal, peppery, sweet grassy component almost like a spicy lemon grass Pellet 12 minutes
0.75 oz simcoe - Bittering woodsy pine, mahogany/walnut wood aroma, with some resinous/candy-like and citrus character. Pellet 5 minutes
0.25 oz simcoe - Bittering woodsy pine, mahogany/walnut wood aroma, with some resinous/candy-like and citrus character. Pellet 0 minutes
0.25 oz columbus - Dual purpose hop with intense earthy and faint citrus character. Use in American ales Pellet 0 minutes
0.25 oz chinook - Spicy, piney flavor with high alpha, used for bittering and late additions in American ales Pellet 0 minutes
Quantity Misc Notes
1.00 unit Wyeast 1028 - London Ale™ Yeast Temperature Range: 60°-72° F (ABV 10%) Med-Low Floculation
After some deliberation I am going to do the full 90min boil. I believe the animal is going for a 60m boil and is using WLP013.
While getting supplies today I had an interesting discussion with one of the employees, and I think others have brought this up also that it is almost impossible to truthfully know if you have any thing over 90 IBU's. So do we get the 102+ IBU's 'Langunitas' states? We may never know.
I will be having a Hop Stoopid while brewing and in a few weeks will have one to compare with, but in the end I hope to just enjoy brewing with a fellow brewer.

Great collaboration brew and doing something a little different and comparing them later is the best part.
Plus, Hop Stupid is just awesome.

So here is the recipe I'm going to be brewing today:

Chinook - 0.45 oz, Pellet, DRY HOP
White Labs WLP013 - London Ale Yeast
Notes
-----
Starter for yeast made previous night.
As Bull said this is based off the 5 gal recipe. I changed a few of my original hop amounts to clean things up. Also upped the Victory a tad from a straight translated amount. I ordered the hops and some misc. supplies last week from Labelpeelers and they don't carry Wyeast so went with White LAbs London Ale. Some digging around on the internet says it is basically the same strain, we'll see...
This is my first RCE. I can't wait to compare our two brews side by side. I think it'll be interesting to see how different brewers, slightly different amounts on a few ingredients, different water, etc may slightly alter the finished product (if at all). I also think it is pretty cool that we have collaborated to both be brewing the same beer at basically the same time though we're miles apart.
And I can't wait to play with a syringe full of hop extract!

Re: Our Hop Stoopid collaboration.
Did anyone ever find out what hops are actually in those hop shots? I've never gotten an answer when I've asked my LHBS except, "I'll have to find out".

I am not sure what hops they use, but I can tell you that stuff is STRONG. The whole house smells like hops!

I can't wait to hear how this one comes out. That hop shot has me intrigued.

Re: Our Hop Stoopid collaboration.
Well she is in the LBK. My OG was a bit low .80 . I used a bit too much water on the top off. One of those pay attention idiot, moments.
I compared the sample to a glass of Hop Stoopid and the color looks good. The smell of this during the boil was insane it was just a hop explosion throughout the entire house. The sample has a great hoppy taste so I think this may be pretty close. Now the wait begins.

Re: Our Hop Stoopid collaboration.
Just finished mine!
My OG wound up at .080 also. I was at 2.5 gallons of wort and checked and was at 1.090' so I added water to get up to my planned 2.75 gallons which took me all the way down to 1.080. Oh well, it'll still be beer!
A couple of firsts for me on this one - first time using liquid yeast, first time doing a starter, first time remembering to use irish moss, and of course the hop shot!
I found that I like starters - I liked the convenience of having the yeast ready to go as opposed to rehydrating the dry yeast during brewing which I usually do.
Irish Moss is sick! I couldn't believe how clear the wort had already dropped before even getting into the fermenter, pretty cool. I took a pic of the Hop Stoopid I was drinking behind the sample tube, I'll post it tomorrow when I'm on my phone.
The hop shot surprised me a bit - they come in a seals foil pack so you won't see the actual syringe until you open it. All the pics I've seen on supplier websites show the resin a brownish color - mine was really dark green. I also found it flowed out of the syringe better than I read it would, I accidentally used 4 ml as opposed to 3.5 ml.
The color was good, a tad darker maybe. Parked her in the basement next to the Blue Moon Clone?? I brewed today also.

Re: Our Hop Stoopid collaboration.
9 hours after pitching and she's blowing foam like mad!
Re: Our Hop Stoopid collaboration.
Intense! BTW, love your blow off setup. Never would've thought to use a spigot for an airlock. Keeps a nice low profile!
Re: Our Hop Stoopid collaboration.
Actually I had that idea really for doing a blowoff tube for a LBK. I ordered a couple of extra LBK lids on one of my orders and figured I could drill them out and attach the spigot and hose as in the pics. i thought I'd use them if I brewed any of their recipes where they warn the keg could explode! I never actually did that but now have 2 bucket lids drilled out for them.
Re: Our Hop Stoopid collaboration.
Be careful with the spigot as they can clog pretty easy. But it does make a nice blowoff.

Re: Our Hop Stoopid collaboration.
I did a gravity reading on my batch today and it came in at .21 this was the expected fg and I am reasonably sure this is where is will end up.
I did a taste of it and was very happy with it. I will do another gravity test on Wednesday and I expect to dry hop then also, in anticipation of bottling on Sat. So far (other than adding to much water) I am really happy with this.

Great to see you both had good brew days and targets. Looking forward to your first pours on this one.
