Finally saw one in da booze store

Post by FrozenInTime »

After hearing about these for a while on different sites, I thought I would never see one, little lone try one. Saw it sitting on a shelf and thought self, this would be great to share with my son this coming turkey day. I picked it up and asked SWMBO if I could get it, she said go for it. I said cool, looked for the price tag, no where to be found. Flagged down a store worker and asked them, how much? Well, there's an old saying, if you have to ask, you can't afford it. Should have realized when I had to ask I was already at strike 2. When the guy told me the price, I damn near dropped it on the spot. I gently sat it back down then proceeded to tell the guy.... no so friendly I was now... put the price tags on it. There is no way in (plz excuse the language) HELL I will pay $199.99 for a freaking bottle of anything, little lone a single bottle of freaking beer!!!!!!!!

It might have been fun to try one of these, but now I know for sure it will never happen. Anyone have a good clone recipe for this?

At that price, it had better be able to raise the dead. No, thanks. The whole idea of Designer Beer sort of turns me off. I may be in the minority, and I'm not saying that I couldn't be persuaded otherwise in some instances, but it just seems sort of ... well, anti-beer, if you know what I mean.

Y'know, this sort of makes me want to get all philosophical/ranty, so maybe I'll just leave it at that for now, let it "ferment" in my brain pan for a while, and turn it into another Beer Blog entry. I don't want to take up space in this thread, especially with stream-of-consciousness writing at 6:00 am on a Sunday morn.

see i'd take that and buy more brew stuff. i don't think you can clone that. it's 27% i didn't think yeast could live in that.

At that price, I'm surprised they didn't have it behind the counter.

I'm with you. I know someone that seeks out "collector" brews. But I won't even put up $30 a bottle for some of the fancy stuff. I pay that for very good rum, then drink it by the shot.

As soon as I saw the post I knew it had to be Sam Adams Utopias. Being from Mass I see these all the time around during the holidays. One package store nearby was actually selling one from 2010 for 175.00 but he says he cant sell it. His distributor asks him to sell 5 a year but he has only ever sold 2 in any year. Just useless info. Cheers

I have a hard time paying 9 or 10 bucks for a bomber of any year-round craft beer, when I can make most batches of homebrew for that much. Definitely not gonna shell out 200 bucks for a Sam Adams.

Unreal. I too am surprised it was just sitting out and not in a case or something.

1) I'm too cheap to drop $200 on a bottle of beer.
2) Jeff, where the hell do you find time to drink tequila with all the brewing you do?
3) When I do drink tequila, it's Patron Silver for me

I'm with you FIT. I had a hard time paying $5 for a bomber of Hop Stoopid, and won't pay $12 for a Chimay Grande Reserve. And I feel your pain. Went to Spec's yesterday in El Paso. Spent half an hour looking over and over the beer wall. Saw some good beers in the bombers, but there is just many problems with that. I think people have touched on it, and I agree. It's pricey to pay $10-15 for essentially 1 beer. You can't really pour half and save the rest for next week like you can have 1 out of a six (or four) pack, and save a couple for later. Sharing is an option, but unless the person I share with chips in (which is kind of messed up for me to ask) then you are paying $10-15 for half a beer (in a way). I think the only reason they do it is to add to the illusion of this being super special, after all, the bottle is more special. I would much rather them put them into a 4 pack, it is about the same amount of beer.

I think I would rather save the $$ from not buying into the expensive beer hype and buy myself a bigger pot. I would love to try to brew the utopia, but I bet that recipe and the hops will be protected from prying eyes for a long time.
