False Bottom?

Post by brewin bull »

I plan on picking up an 8 gallon pot this weekend, is there really any need for a false bottom for it? For now all I plan on doing is extract and some BIAB brewing.

You don't *need* it for BIAB, but it is still useful. It can help keep the bag off the bottom, so if you have to fire up the heat during the mash to keep your temps you won't scorch the bag.

If you are not going to be mashing sans-bag a false bottom is a way overkill. If you want to keep the bag off the bottom you could simply use an upside down pie tin or something along those lines.

I thought this was going to have something to do with stuffing things in the back of your pants.

Definitely a false bottom with BIAB. I just lost a bag on Saturday. Fortunately, it wasn't a total disaster and I was able to strain (almost) everything out of the wort.

It's the closest I've come to crying since my youngest child was born. :laugh

Sorry to resurect this thread but I am looking to buy an 8-10 gallon pot with BIAB in mind. so this may be me WAY over thinking this but, is the purpose of the false bottom to keep the bag off the bottom of the pot or is it to keep the sediment out of the space b/w the false bottom and the bulkhead for transfering the wort? I say this b/c some of the false bottoms are on "legs"and others have connectors on the top of the false bottom. I can see it as more of a strainer with "legs"but I could be wrong.

for this type of pot I would get it drilled locally for the bulkhead and thermometer. http://www.waresdirect.com/products/Res ... -qt-444695
