Dry hopping questions - Diablo IPA refill
I am going to brew a straight MB Diablo IPA refill and want to dry hop for aroma and taste(?) enhancements. So, I have been researching and this is what I have found. Brew as per MB instructions, then approximately 6-8 days before bottling, add 1/2 - 1 oz of hops in a weighted hops bag to the fermenting beer in the LBK, leave in throughout bottling process.
Does this sound right? recommendations?
Next questions,
1) what is the best method to sanitize the hop bag? Boiling? how long? or can I use the no rinse sanitizer that MB supplies? or other methods?
2.) do the hops themselves need to be sanitized? if so, how?
3.) recommended amount/kind of hops for the Diablo IPA? 1/2 oz? 3/4 oz? 1 oz? more?
Have never dry hopped before, so any help is greatly appreciated.

I want you to want me.
Ok, now that is out of the way....
You have a choice on dry hopping: Either use a bag, or don't. Many, including myself, don't. They will settle out before bottling and even more so with a cold crash before bottling.
If you do use a sack - weighted or not is the next decision. I tried both early on (before ditching the bags) and saw no difference in effect.
In terms of how much. 1/2oz will give you some aroma and a full ounce will give you a LOT of aroma so it depends on how much you want, really. The type of hops will affect the strength of the aroma, too. If it's an IPA, almost anything will do for a dry hop but some of the most popular right now are: Centennial, Cascade, Citra, Amarillo, Simcoe and many others.

1) I use Star San. In a spay bottle. I spray the hop bag until damp.Cheaptrix wrote:I am going to brew a straight MB Diablo IPA refill and want to dry hop for aroma and taste(?) enhancements. 2) Nope.
3) I am a huge fan of Citra and Falconer's flight. I would use 1/4 of each or 1/2 of one.
With the Mr. Beer HME I would add something at a 60 min boil to hopefully get rid of the crap POW flavor but that is me.

You're correct Jim. Don't boil the HME, I have been doing extracts for awhile didn't think that through well . I would do a dme boil with some bittering hops to help that HME though.
