If The Borg :borg: wouldn't mind, please look this over and let me know if it looks o.k.
As the title states this is the first extract recipe I've done in over a year, I'm going to top the fermenter off with cold water and I'm not quite sure of my procedure!
I'm doing an extract recipe for the time savings, because the pipeline is getting thin and work is slamming me right now!

fwiw, i find 1/4lb cara-pils enough for the lbk size batches

+1 JJ, it looks like a lot of carapils to me as well.

I've not done an all DME brew so someone might jump in here, but I wonder why you are boiling for 60 with that hop schedule?

Also with all those hops I would consider some Munich LME (for all extract) to give you more malt backbone, although I believe there are plenty pilsner only APAs out there.

I like Amarillo and Citra, never used NS but I understand it has a berry like flavor that is unique.

If you go with just 1/4# of carapils, and that hop schedule you only need to boil for 20 minutes IMHO. No reason to do more with all DME and a tiny bit of crystal type malt. May as well save time, since it's one of the "benefits" of using all DME/LME.

Thanks all.
The hour boil was just a setting I forgot to change. :redface:
It is a five gallon batch so I will cut the Carapils back to 1/2 lb and add the 1/2 lb of 60L I have saved.
That was one of the things I was really unsure of.


So yeah, I'll cut it back to a 20 min boil and save myself quite a bit of time there!
That's why I like to get other eyes on my stuff! :)

BrewBirds, NS is a fantastic hop! This one of the few times I've mixed it with anything else
and I'm really curious as to how they will play together. I had planned on mixing them with Sorachi Ace
instead, but I've got to use up the Citra and the Amarillo!

The last beer I put Nelson in tasted like I put Chardonnay grapes in it. It was yummy.

Yeah, I get "fruity, grapey" when I'm having a brew with NS in it as well. Good description.

never heard of the hops wondering how sharp the taste is. too sharp don't really work, over powers the malt

I have heard of Nelson Sauvin, but only recently have I really learned about it. Evidently, it is supposed to smell/taste something like cabernet sauvignon grapes, and grown in Nelson, NZ, hence the name. Can imagine it to be pretty good in a pale ale.

MrB, the prequel, used Nelson Sauvin in their "Pilothouse Pilsner", which I found to be really good. I've never tried the hop other than that though.

You would want to be conservative with them in a light bodied wheat beer where you want to taste the wheat and the yeast - maybe 1/4oz to start with in an LBK sized batch as a flavor/aroma hop and see what you think. They become very strong very quickly if you use a lot. 1oz of them is very potent in an LBK sized batch as a finishing hop. It will scream "GRAPE!"

But I bet that 1/4oz or maybe 1/2oz would be very tasty in a wheat.

Jim, the batch I have is 12% AA and I've tried them as a bittering hop with a 60 minute boil on a couple of SMaSH's and they didn't impart the flavor I was looking for.
They really lost the grape characteristic and became kinda dank tasting.

They are more of a flavor and aroma hop, in my estimation.
That's why I'm experimenting on this batch with no bittering addition and doing the Hop Slam just for sheets and giggles! :p

Pilothouse Pilsner was by far in my top Mr. Beer recipe!

i don't think your suppost to get much flavor bittering (60min boil). you should really taste it in this brew. i belive 20 min is just about perfect for flavoring. i don't know, i thnk 12a gonna be a little sharp in a wheat. might try it in my apa. thanks
