Anyone here had G-B brews? Opinions?

I picked up a sampler pack of their beer last night......has 3 each of Czech Pilsner, Blond Bock, Marzen & WinterBock.

Never heard of that brewery but sounds like they're into some great beer styles.

Gordon Biersch makes a number of great brews. I love their brewpub in San Francisco when I can get there, and am glad now to be finding their bottles in local stores. Their Fall pack included some of those same beers, which I enjoyed a lot.

Only one of theirs I had was the SommerBrau Kolsch style beer. It was like $4 for a 6 pack and I was very impressed. Based on just that one kind I had, I'd try more. Hope to see it again next summer.

I've been to their brew pub here in Dallas. I thought the Czech Pilsner was pretty good. Their IPA wasn't bad. Actually, all of their brews I sampled were pretty good, but none seem to really knock my socks off, which isn't exactly a bad thing.

Interesting to see their name come up as they started (I think) locally here in CA. I consider them to be a 'chain brewery'. In my experience they make good beer, but nothing I would seek out.

They also do some contract brewing, making the Kirkland brand for Costco in the West. Again, I have nothing against them and think their stuff is consistently good. If it's available at a party, I will gladly partake but it's nothing I would personally head out and buy.

I do believe they are from San Jose, but I could be wrong. I think I remember seeing it on the labels. I agree the beer I had didn't knock my socks off but for the price and the free reusable bottle, I enjoyed it. If I did need bottles and saw their 6 pack for $3 or $4 again I'd definitely buy it.

Czech Pilsner is nice....what Bud would be if it wasn't crap. Wife liked the Blonde Bock but I thought it had an alcoholly aftertaste. I love the Marzen and WinterBock. I'd agree they are solid beers but not overly exciting.

In case it matters, Gordon Biersch appears 6 times in the BJCP guideline as classic examples of styles: Dortmunder Export, Vienna Lager, Oktoberfest/ Marzen, Munich Dunkel, Schwarzbier, Maibock/ Helles Bock. That's as many times as Sierra Nevada.

Definitely a solid brewer then. They brew according to German purity law.

If you've been to Rock Bottom or Big River brewpub chains, you've had their beer as well. Old Chicago pizza is also owned by them, and the OC beers are GB. As others have noted, they contract brew. If you've had store beers (Kirkland at Costco was mentioned... Trader Joe's brand is another big one of theirs), you've likely had either their beer or Matt Brewery beer.

There's one in downtown new Orleans that I used to frequent quite often.....their asst brewer took my wife and I on a tour there and the brewery, while VERY VERY VERY small was so clean it was like it wasn't used. I've tried most of their beers and they are all very good quality, tho not necessarily the style I'd want to drink more than 1 or 2 at a time. My wife LOVED their Hefeweizen and I thought their marzen was quite good. Also their Octoberfest beer was dead on for the style.
