Re: Pliny the Elder
Having tasted a Pliny I am imagining the aromas that were pouring out of the fridge when you opened it. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Re: Pliny the Elder
Transferred to secondary today (sorry, no pictures of the fermenter lid carnage). FG at 1.011, that will put it around 7.3%. The taste was great and the aroma was amazing. Added 1oz each of Simcoe and Centennial and 1.25oz of Columbus (had the .25 laying around).
Just now ordered this Dry Hopper and plan on adding another ounce of each when kegging in 7-10 days.
This madness has to stop....right?

Nice, almost ordered that a few months ago but talked myself out of it. Let me know what you think after you've tried it.

So, This showed up. Washed, sanitized and added 1oz each Centennial, Columbus and Simcoe. Dropped into the keg and racked the Pliny in. Dropped it in the kezzer and turned on the gas. Will pour a glass in a week or so. FG of 1.010 and tasted ok.
Sorry I'm kinda outa sorts. Just found out before starting this project tonight that a friend (husband of our Sphynx breeder) has been diagnosed with cancer. Don't have all the details, just trying to keep my mind occupied. Have enjoyed a good many home brews with Cecil and I will be there for them.Naked Cat Brewery On Tap
Re: Pliny the Elder
Nice job on the hops Jeff....but more important than the beer at this point is the friend. My thoughts and prayers are with you guys and them. Take care of yourself and your friend.

Jeff, I'm sorry to hear about your friend's health. Try to stay positive, many people are beating cancer and he'll need to be positive. Keep me updated and I'll keep him in my prayers.
Regarding the Pliny, I'm not sure when I'm going to get back on that horse but I'm going to, that's for damn sure.

Thanks guys, sorry didn't mean to derail this thread like that, knew that you'd be there for me. Cecil would like both of you and vice versa. I'll let him know my weird friends are there for him (he'll probably say he though he was the weird friend).
Ok, back on track. The hopper worked great, dropped the 3oz in(plenty room for more), screwed on the lid and lowered/dropped it into the keg. It sat diagonal in the bottom of the keg looking forward to the beer that was coming.
Here's the hop sludge from the fermenter dry hopping.

Haven't you used the hopper before? I thought you had it for awhile and I've been meaning to ask you how it worked out.

Re: Pliny the Elder
Sorry to hear about your friend, I hope he gets the help he needs to fight it. I'm sure it will be easier for him with good friends like you helping him.
I have not read the whole thread, but what is that dry hopper? Do you fill it with hops and drop them in the keg, or is it just for a fermenter?

Life is short, live it to it's fullest!
Re: Pliny the Elder
FIT - it's for dry-hopping in the keg. The screen drops right in to prevent the hops from ever reaching the dip tube. The other option is to use a hop-sack or a screen on the dip tube itself.
Jeff, I'm very sorry to hear about your buddy. I'm sure that you'll be strong enough for the both of you when he needs you to be.
Chris, I drank your Pliny last night.
The color and smell were awesome - spot on what I think of when I think of Pliny. Great hop flavor, clean presentation of the flavors and a lingering bitterness on the tongue that says "yeah, I drank that b****!"
I can say once again that you are a damn good brewer, sir. I've been lucky this year to trade many beers with Jeff, Chris and Paul and Chuck (Swenocha) and I've been impressed with the quality of beers that show up on my doorstep. Thanks fellas.

Ron, you're no slouch either and I've enjoyed trading beers with some of the guys as well. Makes brewing even more fun and helps make us all better brewers I think.
