Deep Ellum IPA Clone - RCE

This beer was the RCE between Beer-lord and..........I don't remember.

I didn't sleep well the night before last so I decided to make it a 2-fer last night to ensure a better night's sleep. (It worked).

This pours a nice orange color that is typical and expected from an IPA - nice.
Nice head present that persisted and trapped in the wonderful hop aromas trying to exit the glass. They were fruity & tropical.
I had an original Deep Ellum IPA about 2 weeks ago on tap so it's hard to compare the two. From what I remember, the aroma is similar (but don't quote me on that).

This beer has a nice feel from the body and carb, is tasty with a hop flavor that lingers on the tongue and finishes the same. Again, I can't speak to how well, or not, it's cloned but it's a very good beer as-is. Had I had another, it would have been a 3-beer night. :whistle:

Thanks Ron. Did you notice something strange in the way it finishes? For some reason, when cold, it starts somewhat clean but finishes somewhat yeasty. I had to use a yeast I didn't want to (Notty) since my LHBS didn't have what I wanted. I wasn't pleased.
But, as it warms up, the taste evens out but it's not something I've extremely happy with and am hoping it improves as it ages. Everyone tells me I'm way to critical of my beers but I have to be honest with what I'm tasting.
It sure does have a nice color though.

And, for the record, I did the RCE with rickbray66. Thanks for the review!

Congrats on a good collaboration to you and rickbray66.

I noticed 'something' in the finish that I couldn't identify but it was just a taste I couldn't put a finger on. I assumed it was hops but I suppose it could have been the Notty. It was far from strange, though. Just something I couldn't place. I likely wouldn't have even thought of it if you hadn't said anything.

Like I said, I enjoyed this and would have drank a second if I had it so it worked for me.

It's hard for me too as I've rarely used Notty so I'm not familiar with it and there were 2 hops that I've not used before....Apollo being one as a dry hop and Summit as a bittering hop. So, it's hard for me to really tell what that flavor is. It's not a bad taste, but one I found not complimentary.

What temp did it ferment at?

Usually Nottingham makes very clean beer as long as you keep it 62<. At 60 or < it's cleaner even then S-05 IMHO. I'll ferment IPAs with it at 58-59 in the winter, because it finishes just fine at those temps.

It never got above 66 and a good portion of the first 5 days were 64.
Like I said it's not a bad flavor, just ends a bit different when cold. Can't pin it down to yeast fir sure but since I'm not very familiar with it, I wondered if that could be part of it.

I finally got a tap open in the kegerator and was able to tap my version last Saturday night. I'm looking to do comparisons between mine, Paul's and Deep Ellum's itself later tonight. The color on mine is way off. I've noticed the same with some of my other brews as well, and it is something I've thought about from time to time. More concerning for me was the clarity of mine. I was really shocked. I'm now wondering if I might have forgotten to use Whirlfloc on brew day. The small sample taste I had, however, was quite good. One difference Paul and I had between our two versions was that he used Notty where I used S-04.

Regardless of my color and clarity issues, I had planned on brewing this up again. Now I may redo it sooner and try to rectify said issues.

Working with Paul on this was fantastic and I got a nice IPA recipe in my cookbook now.

Finally getting a chance to drink mine after a nice Christmas in the Village evening with the wife and 4 year old. I've never had the original so I can't comment on how well of a clone this is.....

....but I can comment on what I'm drinking right now. This is a very nice IPA. It poured super clear, orangish color that screams IPA. The hop aroma is really nice, very fruity and citrusy. It's got great body and mouthfeel. I was expecting a bit more bitterness, but in all honesty, I'm glad I'm not getting what I was expecting. Bitterness is very smooth and blends perfect with the hop aroma and flavor. This is a perfectly balanced IPA.

You guys nailed this one, and I'm glad I got one to try. Well done fellas, well done. By the way...did you guys post the recipe for this?

Also, I'm not getting the weird finish that Paul mentioned above either. It has been in the fridge for quite some time, so maybe it's mellowed out with a bit of lagering.?.?.?

Glad you enjoyed this one. I just had one and the last 3 I had didn't have that flavor. Its strange because some do and some don't but when its there, its very pronounced. Not a bad flavor, just somewhat yeasty.
The original beer has a bit more nose but is also the same flavor throughout.....no beginning, middle and end taste, just smooth all the way.
Beersmith shows my recipe at 125 IBU's....NO WAY! Maybe 70. Not sure how it got that but it's the first time I've used Summit and Apollo. I've got a lot more Summit for future beers but no more Apollo.

Here's the recipe I used but I subbed Windsor for the 002. I'd not brew it again with Windsor.

That is a great description of how I remember it. The RCE with bucknut and I is similar to this IMO. It doesn't hit you up front with bitterness or finish overly bitter, it's just a great hop flavor throughout.
