Orange Peel

Post by BeerRust »

I have a wheat beer in the LBK, it has a few more days before bottling. When would adding another 1/2oz of Sweetened Orange peel be a good idea?

I'll need to go to BS to see what we did with orange peel in a Saison but for reference did you add any early in your brewing and this is a second addition? If so how much did you add?

FWIW we got a bit of OP bitterness so that is why I ask but will see where our additions were. Oh what kind of orange peel did you use?

I used sweeten orange peel. Added 1/2 oz into the fermentor when adding the wort. I did a taste test and got some bitterness. I am hoping adding another 1/2oz before bottling may help cut some bitter and add some orange flavor.

My eyes must be going bad. I thought the name of this thread was "Orange Pee!" I thought I might learn something about some unknown - to me - medical condition.
Things men have made with wakened hands, and put soft life into
Are awake through years with transferred touch and go on glowing
For long years.
And for this reason some old things are lovely
Warm still with the life of forgotten men who made them.

Ours was a half ounce at T10 with none in fermenter.
It was a Saison and we planned this one to be ready around Christmas so the first taste was a bit early.
If I understand correctly "sweet" orange peel refers to the type of orange vs. a "bitter" orange.

Mashani or someone might know more about this but I don't think you will get sweetness as in sugars just an orange flavor from the oils.

I think someone made a brew and added orange juice as well as peel (Monsteroyd ??)

1 oz sweet Orange peal @ 10 minutes was WAY TOO MUCH in Wheat I made mid summer. 1/2 oz @ 5 minutes in a Saison was ok.

I use both sweet & bitter. When adding post primary I make a tea and/or a feeding solution depending on recipe
