Re: Hot break
Watch your boil carefully and as the hot break begins pull the pot off of the heat or spray it with a spray bottle of water. After 2 or 3 times it will settle into a normal boil.
Re: Hot break
Hot breaks are a lot like hydrometers. You never know when it's gonna go bad.

Re: Hot break
Yup Bob, Fermcap does wonders. It actually allows me to get stuffs done out in the garage while brewing as I dont have to worry about that pesky boilover anymore. If it wasnt for the big pot all steaming over the propane burner SWMBO would be fooled in to thinking I was cleaning and not brewing.

Keep your eyes on the pot!! That's rule #3 of Fight Club....
Re: Hot break
And keep your eyes on the pot during late extract and Whirfloc additions too.
But this is just advise I've read, it's never happened to me personally.

Re: Hot break
Yes you are correct When you add a whirlfloc tab at the end of the boil, it will start to foam up, but I haven't had it even close to a boil over like at hot break on DME's, but it will foam up quick.Brewbirds wrote:And keep your eyes on the pot during late extract and Whirfloc additions too.

While we are on the subject of Hot Break ( and I like this subject because of a lot of different experiences with it I've had ) Usually LME won't be as bad as DME, but you still really have to watch it and it will boil over too. I use a therm. and when it gets close to the boiling point I stay close by and watch, pull off the heat and stir lightly usually about 3 times and then good to go for a nice long hop boil. Even though I haven't had a boil over in a long while, I still put papers down when I boil, other wise you may need a jackhammer to clean up the mess.

Same here. Fermcap works wonders.haerbob3 wrote:add a drop of fermcap to the boil never had one
Although, I've read that Fermcap is silicone-based and not intended for use in unfiltered beer. But, I'm thinking 1-2 drops per gallon (my dosing level) isn't exactly like chugging liquid plastic. I hope.

Re: Hot break
Never had any issues with it. The finished beer looks and tastes great, nice foam and clear as a sunny winter's day

Re: Hot break
I read that there is a concern that long time use of fermcap, because it's silicon-based, can result in the development of man breasts. Here's a picture of Joe Chiante either eating a sub sandwich or a luffa sitting out in his dingy. I'd be very careful if I were you.
