Mr Beer forum is really dead

Post by docpd »

I keep going back to the old forum just to see what is going on, and nothing ever is. They advertise having over 10,000 members, but there is 100 times more activity here with our 200 members.
I find it really sad that they chose to destroy such a fine site. I am thankful to Louie for setting up this one, so those of us so passionate about our brewing have a home.

I must confess that I still visit the MB Forum every day. It is sad to watch the decline. New discussions are almost nonexistent, and attempting to search through the archives is frustrating at the best of times. I keep telling myself not to go back there. I have everything I need (and more) with the Borg. But it is like watching a train wreck. I just cannot look away...

Here, here.

I'm glad I was able to find my way here after seeing a post someplace on the MB site. Much better and it seems everyone from the old site has found their way here just about. Thanks, Louie :urock:

I really think Coopers ruined Mr. Beer.

Worse move ever.

Not to mention the HME's I am not fond of P.O.R. in it, just a funky taste I can not get over

I get the same feeling. Mr Beer was a very cool and healthy entity until Cooper's came along to jump on their wagon. Maybe that weight was too much. Unless there's more than meets the eye, Mr Beer has gone flat.

I joined over there to get some guidance on my witbier. I came across a post that said the party had moved over to beer borg dot com.

The whole time, I'm trying to wrap my head around how weird the forum worked. Now I know.

I still check in on the MrB boards daily, but as was mentioned not much goes on in there. I answer a couple of newbie questions a week as that’s all the traffic there is. When I had a question on Tuesday for which I needed a quick answer, I came here.

There will still be a new batch of newbies after the holidays looking for advice. I can help them with MrB extracts and recipes along with the move to 5gals and steeping grains, but that’s about it. I’ve done a couple PMs, but don’t have any extensive experience with mashing to be able to help folks out who want to make that leap.

The purchase by Coopers was a waste. Most MrB brewers eventually make the jump and start spending their money elsewhere. Now that one of the "elsewheres" bought them out, they had a perfect opportunity to capture those customers - at least for awhile - as they move up the ladder. They could have simply linked to the Coopers site (easy peasy) or relabeled Cooper products as their own. Even the Demon has larger batches and equipment. Shoot, start selling brew pots and mashing equipment and they could get even a few more bucks out of them. With their size compared to most LHBSs and online places they should be able to match or best their pricing.

So rather than have a perfect upgrade path that could cost as little as two cents to pursue and keep customers (adding the Coopers url), they ended up pissing off all the regulars and let their new competitor grab some of the market. Even if they didnt still use MrB products except for maybe the LBK at least they gave great, FREE advice.

I don't really think your gonna see too many noobs over there. I know I just read the boards over there for the first 2 weeks w/o posting. if I had seen then, what I see over there now. I'd have never posted, I was also on Beer Advocate and would've probably gone with them.
"Filled with mingled cream and amber
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chambers of my brain
-- Quaintest thoughts -- Queerest fancies
Come to life and fade away;
Who cares how time advances?
I am drinking ale today."

I still read the posts and visit, and occasionally post, as I do here. There are new brewers asking questions, and they deserve a good answer to their inquiry or problem. As far as activity, the range of topics, and the expanse of knowledge, this is the place to be. I would not call the Mr. Beer site dead, just not as vibrant as it once was. There is no harm in checking into the Mr. Beer site; you might be able to help out someone. Just my humble opinion.

A long, long time ago
I can still remember how that forum used to help me brew
And if I needed some info
That would be the place to go
And I'd find out what I needed to do
But then they did a software up-grade
The forum's luster began to fade
Louie went on his own
And made for us this new home
And I can't remember if I cried
They said it was fixed but they lied
Something touched me deep inside
The day
The Forum

Died
Things men have made with wakened hands, and put soft life into
Are awake through years with transferred touch and go on glowing
For long years.
And for this reason some old things are lovely
Warm still with the life of forgotten men who made them.
