Bubs' Pale Ale

Post by philm00x »

Keeping with a theme of trying to name my beers using my cat's name (or one of his nicknames). This is the final breakdown of a recipe I developed with thanks to you, the :borg: collective, with particular assistance in the hop schedule. If everything turns out as planned, this will be a very nice American pale ale with a good malty flavor up front, finishing with a tropical fruit and melon flavor/aroma using Belma and Galaxy hops. The Galaxy hops have an amazing aroma, mostly the passion fruit, but pineapple and slight citrus as well.

I agree on the Galaxy. I've only smelled it once but it was wonderful.

I think Bub's, aka Mr. Rufus would be happy to sink his claws into a glass of that. :clink:

Edited the first post, as I just received the pertinent information about Belma hops from Hops Direct. This year's pellet crop has 10.4% alpha, with 12.4% hop storage index. This doesn't change the total IBUs on my recipe very much (barely 1 point less), but I just want to be accurate.

Mashing in on this right now, and I opened the bag of Belma to get a whiff of what they're like. Smells very tropical, like pineapple/passion fruit, a bit of orange in there as well. The profile mentions notes of strawberry and melon as well, which I haven't detected but maybe it'll pronounce itself as such in the beer. Regardless, this should be a great hot weather beer! Lord knows we get enough of that here in Florida.

Very nice, Phil. Interested to see how it turns out from a bitterness side with the hop additions. May have to brew up a batch to see how it will work in some of our APA & IPA's. Post up how she tastes when it's done :)

Just bottled the all Galaxy IPA Phil and the aroma and taste are spot on to your description. Your description of the Belma sounds like it will be a great match with Galaxy.
Sounds like you've got a great one in the works.

Well, I'm gonna have to follow this thread as things progress. Looks like a good recipe, Phil; I especially like the addition of Munich (I use a Munich addition in my Crown Top Pale Ale). I'm unfamiliar with those hops, though, so I'm interested in what you think of them.

For those of you here that like tropical pineapple and passion fruit flavor, this beer has got plenty of it! After tasting a sample of this, I have decided to omit the dry hop all together. It doesn't need any more aroma, as it is very intsense as is, and I don't want to increase any perceived bitterness by adding another 1.5 oz of these high alpha hops to it. Honestly, I'm hoping that, after conditioning, the malt flavor will come through a little more.

Really excited for this one! Bottled today with FG of 1.011 for 6.4% ABV. It's a fantastic orangey copper color, smells of passion fruit, pineapple, mango... all sorts of tropical. The flavor of the hops has mellowed out compared to the last time I sipped a sample, and the malt is breaking through. Exactly what I was hoping for. Now to let it sit in the bottle for a couple weeks and pop one in the fridge!
