I hate when I miss OG by this much
Maybe I was distracted by the burning sensation on my chest. PM extra hoppy red ale. Projected OG 1.054. What did I hit? 1.036. The sample tasted very good, so I got that. But damn.....
Re: I hate when I miss OG by this much
Was this an all grain batch? If so, what temp did you mash at, how long and how did you do the sparge?
Add some DME if you have some laying around.
Have you checked your hydrometer to make sure it's accurate?

Yup, details! This is why I always keep a few pounds of DME around.
Life is short, live it to it's fullest!

Hmm that will teach to quit messing with nipples when brewing. Seriously as BB asked are ya OK? Like FIT said that is what DME is for. Did your PM supply most of the fermentables? As BL asked at what temp? What grains?? Post your recipe & procedure please?

Especially that kinky wort splashing/nipple burning procedure. That sounds exciting.haerbob3 wrote: Post your recipe & procedure please?

Would you guys please clean it up a bit!?? My wife is now afraid I'm going to burn my nipples...
Re: I hate when I miss OG by this much
Alright, I know better. Should've posted the recipe from the git go. But I cleaned everything up and jumped right into the next brew.
First of all, yes I'm OK. No blisters from the hot water, but my right side of my chest is pretty red and sensitive. I've been putting Aloe on it since this morning.
Now onto the recipe:
1 lb Pale Ale Malt
1 lb Chrystal 90
12 oz Honey Malt
8 oz Chrystal 20
8 oz Aromatic
2 oz Black Roast Barley
Mashed for 45 minutes at 155. Sparged with 1/2 gallon at 170 degrees.
Then I added a gallon of water to the wort (more on this later), bought close to a boil, added 5 lbs Munich LME, and got past hot break.
1.5 oz Galena for 90 minutes
.5 oz Challenger for 30
.5 Galena for 1
I've got two thoughts. One, I didn't account for boil off. I just went on auto pilot and added 1 gallon, but this is a 90 minute boil, so I lost more than I was counting on. I might have diluted the wort quite a bit more than expected. Second, when I took my sample, I had aerated the wort, but not really mixed it, so by taking it right off the top, I probably didn't get a true reading. More water than wort.

I would've gotten the eye roll, and then called a "dumbass".... She sure knows how to make me feel better
Re: I hate when I miss OG by this much
First, glad you are ok. Next, Honey Malt should only be 5% of the total malt at most. I think 2-3% is better.
I would think that 5 lbs of Munich would have got you above 1.036 by itself.

Topless brewing? Interesting....truckndad wrote:Maybe I was distracted by the burning sensation on my chest. PM extra hoppy red ale. Projected OG 1.054. What did I hit? 1.036. The sample tasted very good, so I got that. But damn.....
Re: I hate when I miss OG by this much
Agreed the LME should have given you more of an OG. Why only a 45 min mash? How did you check to be sure conversion was complete. I will often do a 90 min mash. How did you check the OG hydrometer or refrcometer

Re: I hate when I miss OG by this much
I've been all extract and only recently got into partial mash. So I got the kit from Austin Home Brew and followed the directions to a tee just like I did way back when I got my first mb kit and that's what they said

I don't doubt you followed directions, but it takes at least an hour to mash i usually go 75 min.. your splarge is also important in getting the most sugar out of the grain
