Shared beer reviews

Post by Beer-lord »

All, how do you feel about having a section where we can review the beers we've been lucky to receive from other borg members?

Louie, if you like this idea, I'd like to ask if you would put up a separate area for beer reviews. I see this not as a place to degrade or pick (though I know we wouldn't stoop to that) but to give genuine reviews which would help make all of us who share our beers, better. If you do, please move this review to the new section.

I'll start if I may with first saying I've been extremely lucky to receive beers from a number of borg members and I've sent some as well asking for HONEST, OPEN and HELPING criticism. Of course, we all have different tastes but that aside, maybe something short and pithy with a photo if possible.

Here's one to start:
Big PapaG sent me a few and most are those that I don't make or don't normally drink but I enjoy them even more because of that. Tonite, after coming home from the gym and to put those calories back on, I grabbed Papa's Downtown Cocao Brown (that's how he spelled cocao on the label :laugh ) English Brown Ale. It came in the package partially leaked but I'm not dissing it. I opened it with a nice, pffft and a pleasant, slight caramel, malt aroma. 6%...yummy, a quick buzz on an empty stomach before dinner!
I usually like to drink all my beers a bit warmer than most and browns, even warmer. This one was possibly a tad over carbed though not excessive. It comes forward with a medium body, and finishes with a very mild, sweetness. I don't know the SRM but I'd so near 30 and a light does not pass thru it though it is very clear. Little hop aroma, and a mild caramel almost slightly fruity middle.

The aroma is slightly sweet and caramel as well. I believe if it were slightly less carbed, I might even be able to distinguish more flavor and get more of the mild creaminess it offers.
I'm not 100% familiar with this style but I would give this a solid 8 out of 10 for the style but I know one thing for, I'm really enjoying it. I've paused typing this as I drink it to see what happens as it warms up even more. The caramel does come out a bit more.

I am very appreciative to have the chance to enjoy this and his other beers and I hope my review is seen as it was given....an honest view from another home brewer.
Thanks much Papa G! :thanks:

Totally down for this thread! I've got some beer to ship out later this week so hopefully those people can review my brews. I'd love to get the chance to review others' beers as well.
