Secret Santa Beer Review: New Glarus Brewing

Post by JimH »

It has taken me a while to get this posted, but I wanted to post my review of the New Glarus Brewing Company beers that were sent to my by D34THSPAWN. He sent me a 6 pack of beers, 1 each of Moon Man Pale Ale, Spotted Cow Farm Ale, Uff Da Bock, Black Top Black IPA, Two Women Lager, and Fat Squirrel Nut Brown.

The first one I tried was the Moon Man. This was a very well crafted pale ale, using a blend of 5 hops. This one came across as perfectly balanced, and possessing a very unique hop complexity due to the 5 varieties. If I could get Moon Man around here, it would definitely be in consideration for my "desert island" beer. It is that good!

The Spotted Cow Farm ale was another fantastic beer. It had the right balance of hops, malt, and just a touch of that spiciness from the yeast. Some farm ales I have tried had too much of that yeast spice, but I don't much care for it. This one hit it right on the head without being too spicy, or too bland.

The Black Top Black IPA, was amazing. It had a very good malt backbone which is critical for the black IPA, but without going overboard on the hops.

Three is the limit on attachments, so I will continue in another post. I could ramble on all day about these beers, but I am trying to keep it short as to not bore the Borg. I will say this, I enjoyed all 6 of the beers. New Glarus is definitely a great brewery, and if you have the chance, pick up some of their beers, you will not be disappointed. Thank you D34TH for the beers! Certainly a great 6 pack!

The Fat Squirrel was another great beer. I think this may be the best nut brown I have ever had.

The Uf Da bock was a well crafted beer. D34TH and I talked about this one in a PM, a good bock, but neither of us are fans of the style. This is one of the better bocks I have had, however.

The final beer was the Two Women lager. It was a little on the darker side, and the picture made it look even more so, but it did not come across the palate as a darker beer. Again, a well crafted, perfectly balanced beer.

I definitely will keep my eye out for New Glarus anytime I go to a bigger city!

Love New Glarus beers - too bad they are only distributed in Wisconsin... Jim - don't bother looking, unless that big city is Milwaukee! Spotted Cow is actually a Cream Ale, not Farmhouse - it's the official beer of Wisconsin!

Glad to see the reviews! glad you enjoyed the brews, it is unfortunate that you can only get them here in wisconsin. Maybe we will have to do a trade sometime!

Yeah, I would drink Moon Man and Fat Squirrel until the cows come home! There are some New Mexico breweries that are distributing their beers here, and some of them are pretty good. I haven't tried pecan beers or the green chile beers, but they are available.

I work with a wisconsonite and just this past Tuesday he was telling me about this very brewery. He told me it's a very good beer but few know about it because you can't get it anywhere but Wis. I believe he said it was a neighborhood type of brewery. I'd love to try it.
