3 and a half for the actual boiling/brewing and 45 minutes for the clean up and wait for the wort to cool down so I could pitch the yeast.

I want to think I did something wrong, so I can cut down on that time, but I'm not sure what it would be.
4 hours isn't too far off for a extract batch with a steep and 60 min boil, and especially being your first try at it. This is the only kind of brewing I do and always around 3 hrs or so from start to finish.
BYO mag. Has a nice article on doing it in 2 hrs, you need everything 100% ready to go and would need a wort chiller.

Thanks berryman

I'm not upset about the time as much as I'm surprised. I'm so used to MB and Coopers kits that I clearly wasn't prepared for this. I really like how much more involved I am in the beer this way, and I look forward to going AG one day. I just need to plan my day more appropriately now, rather than procrastinate for 12 hours before I start.
You mean there is another way to brew???

Things men have made with wakened hands, and put soft life into
Are awake through years with transferred touch and go on glowing
For long years.
And for this reason some old things are lovely
Warm still with the life of forgotten men who made them.

I'm watching the PBA World Series before I head out to work.

I was a 5-pin bowler for 20+ years before I tried my hand at 10-pin, and I never really got the hang of it. In 5-pin I take one step before throwing the ball, I tried that with 10-pin and it just didn't work. I was also used to aiming for the side of the centre pin and that REALLY doesn't work in 10-pin! A curve in 5-pin can be really detrimental, so trying to learn how to get a curve in my delivery in 10-pin was like learning a new language.

Now 5-pin is disappearing in my area, so I may have to figure out this crazy 10-pin thing

Yep, I tried that. But my ball doesn't curve and the pins don't scatter like they do in 5. So basically I take out the middle bunch and leave everything on the outside.

I throw a straight ball, and hit the 1-3 area head on. Works for me.... when my aim is on.
