Frozen HME

Yes BrewDemon and Mr. Beer kits are pretty darn easy but sometime you need a little help from the Borg to get you on the right track. Post your questions here!

Frozen HME

Post by Brewbirds »

Hi guys,

BB2 got his BD kit from the fantasy football contest yesterday.

When I unpacked it the two cans (Evil Pils) were extremely cold and since they are cans I don't know if the contents were frozen.

If they did freeze does anyone know if that ruins them?

Also is there going to be Pride of Ringwood in this?

It's really hard to ruin HME. My guess is that they are OK.

Pride of Ringwood is found in the new Coopers/Mr Beer HME's. One Evil Pils is form the old, pre-Coopers good ole days so you're not going to get that in it.

Thanks Wings, good news on both fronts.

I wanted to be sure PoR was what I didn't like about Mrb. so I bought an oz., it is. used it in an apa, I ended up making a MrB batch. :D

I am drinking ale today."

Almost all of the MB batches we brewed are still in the closet. I can't stand that stuff.
I might have to drink them if my wing doesn't heal soon though as the pipeline is shrinking.

Every time I go back to certain batches from the contest winnings, I remember why I haven't drank one in a while. Not that likely I'll buy any more HMEs, but I would never buy the Diablo IPA or Northwest Pale again for certain. Probably a few others. Really the darker beers seem to mask the PoR flavor (or maybe they don't use it in all), as I've had much better success with the Winter Dark, Bewitched Amber, Oktoberfest, and Stout. Also had decent success with the weisenbier.

The Canadian seems ok to me too, I don't taste the POR in it. I've made some good light colored Belgian type beers using it as a base. It may still have POR in it but it's so lightly bittered that I may simply not notice its flavor. Where say the Czech Pilsner, which is what they use in most of their Belgian recipies, I can't stand, I taste the POR strongly in it, and it wrecks it for me. I didn't get the POR in the steam beer I made from the cerveza either, but it may have been that I added enough Northern Brewer to mask it, and it's also very lightly bittered. But everyone tastes it differently, some folks stronger then others.
