This morning we were watching some of the Today Show before venturing outside to clear snow (or maybe not, it's snowing sideways now). Anyway, Dr. Nancy Snyderman gave tips to avoid problems in the extreme cold. One of the tips was "avoid alcohol". Avoid alcohol? That's heresy!
Very good tip of course, you can drink alcohol if you're inside...

Alcohol will slightly lower your body temp, so I'm told. But I don't think it's relevant for most Americans. A policeman, forest ranger or plow driver shouldn't be drinking at work anyway. Most people don't stay out in the cold for long enough to contract hypothermia. Do you think she was talking to the homeless?

"Filled with mingled cream and amber
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chambers of my brain
-- Quaintest thoughts -- Queerest fancies
Come to life and fade away;
Who cares how time advances?
I am drinking ale today."

She must have been drunk!
Things men have made with wakened hands, and put soft life into
Are awake through years with transferred touch and go on glowing
For long years.
And for this reason some old things are lovely
Warm still with the life of forgotten men who made them.

What the hell does NBC know about drinking beer out in the cold?!? Listen to the voice of experience and go for it.
All things in moderation of course, but I've had some of my best days drinking on (and above) the snow.

I think I saw that segment. At the next commercial break the same station was advertising flasks.
