I had to wear 5 layers to go skiing twice last week. I felt like an astronaut.

When I was a kid I went skiing one weekend and it was around -10 below and had a windchill of -40. We had to purchase entire new gear. It's also the only time I was happy to wear mittens. But it was awesome because we could just ski right up to the lift and get on.

My coldest memory as a kid is riding the old double chair at Killington. They used to cover you with heavy wool blankets on the ride up.

Ski clothing has made major improvements in the past 15-20 years. The stuff now is so much warmer and dryer. It's more functional too. I tried skiing with mittens a few years ago. I didn't like it. Got me some Hestra's and never looked back.

RE: Temps. Right now it is -20 in my back yard. Real temps without windchill. Must be -40 or less with the windchill. Made the dogs really rowdy for about 1 minute on their last "go out and pee" trip of the day. Then they wanted to go right back in the house.

RE: Ski stuff. I have this nice pair of gloves that are sort of mittens and sort of gloves, as in the thumb and my index finger are like in "gloves" and the rest of my hand is like a "mitten". It is the best of both worlds, I can still manipulate things, they are great for properly holding the poles while cross country skiing, and they are warm.

Cold enough that my truck wouldn't start this morning. Just couldn't get it to turn over. Had to take the wife's car to work this morning......now the rest of my day is all f'd up. Got to take a charger home and start it, then most likely get a new battery.

This morning when I woke up it was -15 with a windchill of -37! This is just freaking crazy. We actually have ice forming on the inside of our windows. First time I remember seeing that happen.

5 gallon horse buckets frozen solid in 3 hours. Had one bucket shatter when I smacked it on the ground to get the "cube" out. ..WTF.. At least I will have plenty of ice for the weekends brewing

Well, I survived working outdoors (not the whole day, thank goodness! I had quite a few indoor commercial services today). Single digits with a wind chill below zero. It's supposed to be better over the next few days, so if this was the worst of it, I got through it.

Glad I thought to bring the brass monkeys inside, though.

Oh yeah, and my basement temps are slightly below 60 now, so it's slowing down all my fermentation. Except maybe the steam beer, but that may turn out to be a California Lager instead.

First my pipeline runs the risk of drying up, and now it's running the risk of freezing.

it's 49 in my brew room! only place in here where yeasts are still working is in the fermentation chamber (it's 65 in there). got down to 10 last night the water I left dripping outside froze mid drip. been crawling around under my house thawing out water lines. not done, just had to get out for a while. so far no leaks. Master bedroom water is frozen, has happened before, morons installed pipes on outer wall. We didn't leave open the cabinet doors which helped in the past. Other water upstairs though, have to wait until it warms up later in the week to see if they defrost ok.
