I don't think the refs know how to call holding against GB

I can't remember a year when the refs were so bad for ALL teams. They even get it wrong on replays and that says something.

Or pass interference. It was a bit of a free for all.
And I'm sure the Pats won't host the Colts.
I thought yesterday's games were better, but nearly everything was close. I look forward to more good games.

As far as the Holding calls go; The refs aren't going to call them like they should in an effort to give the QB a little more protection. We're going to see this more and more as the concussion issue gets to be bigger and bigger.

But for the Pass Interference; I couldn't believe it when Aikman said that it was good that the refs were "letting them play". It's against the rules ALL SEASON LONG! Just because it's the Play-Offs doesn't mean they should throw the rules book out the window.
Things men have made with wakened hands, and put soft life into
Are awake through years with transferred touch and go on glowing
For long years.
And for this reason some old things are lovely
Warm still with the life of forgotten men who made them.

It's true that holding behind the line is winked at. There was plenty of holding in the secondary too.

related in a way... this past baseball season was piss poor in balls/strike calls, and the "in the neighborhood" calls at second base were terrible.

Hopefully, they smarten up with the holding calls before anymore games are played, it's just not right...

Agree 100%. The only consolation is that they called it the same both ways. Or, to be more accurate, didn't make the calls both ways. The only thing worse than what happened is when they call it one way and not the other. At least it was equal and sometimes that is the best we can hope for.

I'm in favor of the non-calls. Pass interference is too easy to commit these days. In general, they've made it practically impossible for an offense to NOT move the ball by passing, unless your quarterback is completely incompetent <cough>AndyDalton<cough>.

The offense has every advantage as it is...why should barely bumping a WR downfield result in a 50-yard penalty, when a nut-shot or wrenching a guy by the facemask, or targeting his head maxes out at 15 yards?

Why they haven't changed to the college rule (15 yds or spot of foul, whichever is less) is beyond belief.

Well...I'll agree that some of the calls are ticky-tack for sure when it comes to PI but what was going on in the GB/49er game was holding plain and simple. It went WAY past what could/should be left alone.

I'd be all for the 15 yard or less spot foul rule, but then I think they should call it every time a defender puts his hands on a receiver downfield (beyond the legal contact near the line of scrimmage) before the ball gets there if that becomes the rule. An inadvertent bump in close coverage is one thing but not hands to the body. I think there should be no 'judgement' in that scenario, it just *is* a penalty if the rule is 15 yards or less spot foul. To me that's a fair tradeoff between offense and defense.

When I was doing some research for the Borg NFL Survivor game one of the web sites scouted which officiating was assigned to which game and did a break down on how they called games during the season. This year they have really come under fire for doing a bad job in general which is ironic since they went through a union fight with the league, basically won and then became crappy.

The whole "let them play" because it is the playoffs is crap because there is no consistency and they have played major roles in game outcomes this year.

The playoffs' winners' should not end up being the result of bad calls it should be about bad coaching or player performance.

The NFL is picking greed over sport and the fans are the losers because of it.

I would love to see a 5yard penalty for trying to influence the refs. A lot of the problem is when a pass is incomplete, the WR is always gesturing like hes throwing the flag. It could be that the WR just sux and the pass was incomplete. Either way the NFL has to be kicking themselves for giving in to the refs. The scab refs just needed some experience. The games are approaching 3.5 to 4 hours long even with the real refs back. I get that there is no 100% and human nature plays a part but some of the calls this year were just BAD. Either way, playoffs are exciting and a champion will be crowned.
