Talon IPA

Post by FedoraDave »

I decided to add some ingredients to my Northern Brewer list, and figured I'd make a very simple extract batch, almost a SMaSH brew. It's going to be a 2.5 gallon batch.

3 lb. Munton's Light DME
1/4 lb. 40L
Falconer's Flight hops - I ordered 1 oz. and haven't decided the schedule yet, but I'm thinking 1/2 oz for 60, 1/4 oz. for 20, and 1/4 oz. for 5.
Yeast is Danstar American West Coast Ale.

This may be more of a Pale Ale, I dunno. Calling it "Talon" because of the Falconer's Flight. Mostly, I'm interested in what this hops brings, hence the simplicity of the recipe. I'd like to brew this on Sunday, but I don't know if my order will get here by then. Supposed to be pretty nasty weather coming.

This is actually a very complex recipe, considering that Falconer's Flight is a dozen or so hop varieties blended together ;) I bet it'll be tasty though!

The product description intrigued me, and I wanted to make something interesting and tasty, but easy to toss together for a short brew day.

I have "House" recipes for many styles of beer. A house Pale Ale is something I've not said "this is it" to yet, but every time my son and I talk about it, the one using only Falconer Flight hops always comes up. I think it's time to re-brew that recipe.

Looking at BeerSmith it was a 5 gallon with .5oz at 60, .5 at 15 and 1oz at 7, it was tasty. So I think what you have will work just fine.

What you are doing looks more like an APA than an IPA. It should be interesting to see what those hops taste like.

Yeah, I'm less concerned with actual style than I am with tasty beer for this one. An APA might be nice to have in the rotation, though, and if I like how this turns out, I would seriously look into converting it to an AG recipe and making fivers out of it to keep in the pipeline on a regular basis. It's good to have house beers.

Brewed this today. Should be a good one, if the aroma is any indication. 1.058 OG, and I really liked the way the Falconer's Flight took off. Decided to call it Raptor APA, but I think it's gonna be good beer.
