Hello fellow brewers

Post by Peoria_Brewer »

Hello. I'm from Peoria Illinois.
Curious, what was all of your answers to the number of ingredients in beer?
I said 4:
Water
Grains
Hops
Yeast

Anyone else have something else?

Welcome to the Borg Brew_n_Cue! Glad you found us!

99% of the time, my answer would be the same as yours. However, there are times when other ingredients are appropriate for the style. I come from 100% German ancestry so it's primarily Reinheitsgebot for me!

I was torn between malt and grain. But decided grain, because there are some beers that don't use malt. Rare, yes. Does anyone know why it asked those questions?

That I know of, all beers use malt. Some use barley malt, some wheat malt, some rye malt, and now with gluten-free beers, sorghum malt. And of course, any combination of all of those malts can be used together in a beer. They are all grains, but they have been malted to activate the enzymes that mashing will require in order to convert their starches into fermentable sugars.

Hello and Welcome to The BORG I kind'a forgot that question was asked, I'm guessing to help keep spammers and bots away, I'm sure someone else can answer it better.

Chicha, a south American beer doesn't use malted corn. To get the fermentables out of the corn, it is chewed and spit it, then dried in the sun. I don't do it that way, I use malted corn, but I do have that recipe with chewed corn. Also, there are fermented horchatas that are made from regular over boiled rice.

And then the fight began...
Things men have made with wakened hands, and put soft life into
Are awake through years with transferred touch and go on glowing
For long years.
And for this reason some old things are lovely
Warm still with the life of forgotten men who made them.

Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chambers of my brain

I am drinking ale today."
