Question: Capitalize beer styles or not?

Post by Kealia »

There it is: Do you capitalize a beer style when talking about it, or just a beer name?

For example, do I write:
A) I brewed a pale ale today?
B) I brewed a Pale Ale today?

I'm *guessing* that you only capitalize if you call the beer by name, but I really don't know.
Example: "I brewed Kealia's Pale Ale today" versus "I brewed Kealia's pale ale today", right?

There has to be some English majors here, or at least some people smarter than me.
What say you?

Yeah, this is the stupid stuff I think about...

I always capitolize it because it is a name. A name of a style but a name none the less.

I agree...it's a name, so I capitalize.

imo only if the name has a proper name in it. i.e. an American Wheat, or a Bavarian Pilsner, but not a pale ale.

Who cares how time advances?
I am drinking ale today."

I think all Beer Terminology deserves to be capitalized, especially when discussing Home Brewing, Our Beers and Beer Styles. ;)

I've never thought about it much (and thanks for providing fodder for keeping me awake at night now).

But I guess I prefer to capitalize if there's a specific name involved.

I brew Crown Top Pale Ale, which is a pale ale with some rye malt.

Sort of like saying if you're in mood for a latte, Starbuck's MochaFrappaJavaChino Latte is a good choice.

I'm not sure if I capitalize when I'm talking about them but when I'm typing about them then this is how it works...

Warm still with the life of forgotten men who made them.

Dang it! I thought that "caps lock" was to keep your hat from falling off when typing...

I capitalize it, unless I've had fifteen home brews, then I lose interest in being "correct".

I don't think pale ale, as a style should be capitalized.
BUT. I always capitalize it anyway

I should say I almost always capitalize.
Or someone might find a post here where I didn't

I should add..that whether or not I capitalize also depends on whether I am using my laptop or my phone. When using my phone I often don't capitalize and also do a lot of typos. The thing is handy as all get out but clumsy for typing as well.

+1. The only time I capitalize if not in a proper beer name is the emphasize the style in a long post... or I'll bold or whatever. But, in most cases, I'm with the Hat.
