Borg personalities (keep it nice)

Post by FedoraDave »

In another thread, Brewbirds referred to me as the Borg Spiritual Leader. I'm flattered, although I'm not sure just why she said that.

But it occurred to me that there are definitely some unique personalities that have emerged here on the Borg. I'm looking for positive or amusing personalities, and if this thread turns nasty, I won't hesitate to ask that it be locked and deleted. Let's have some fun and spread the appreciation we have for each other.

For me, Russki is a marvel at analyzing what certain malts will bring to a recipe. More than once, he's amazed me with his observations on malt.

Screwy Brewer has made it his business to know a lot about different yeast strains. Plus, if you don't check out his blog, you're missing a lot.

Yankeedag is just a down-to-earth guy with a wry sense of humor, and someone who doesn't mind a joke at his own expense. And he helped me more than anyone when I was first starting to branch out into steeping grains, extract brews, hops additions, and such. I learned a lot from him.

There are more, I'm sure. But I'm also sure that we all can contribute, so I'll leave it up to you to show how special the Borg is to you.

Dave, thanks for your kind words - I'm honored to be mentioned. I suppose I can pick on a couple Borg members...

Mashani - the ultimate authority of all things Belgian, I like to think of him as the Borg's resident monk. I would not brew a Belgian beer without consulting with him first.

Kealia - notwithstanding his dislike of porters, he's the ultimate west-coast style expert. If you want to clone anything from the likes of Stone or Rogue, he's your guy.

Inkleg - our naked cat expert - no cat hair in his beers. He's known as the most generous Borg member!
In Soviet Russia, beer brews you!

Russki I think of more as an innovator of DYI equipement. Screwey has a talent in that area too. But Russki never ceases to amaze me in this area. He is also very sharp in brewing techniques.

I have enjoyed sharing and learning from a number of great people on this forum. The RCE's have been a great way to chat with some folks one on one and learn more about them. There are a few guys that I share beer with regularly as we have some very similar tastes (and they put up with my swill).
The knowledge in this forum is astounding and the quality of beers I've been lucky to have received have been truly great.
We all have our personalities and sometimes it's hard to read between the lines of a forum post but I know the folks here are all good people who enjoy their hobby and want to share and learn.

Banjo-guy, as far as post counts, I wouldn't put too much into that. I'm chatty and my counts are high and my knowledge of brewing is not any more advanced than many guys with lower counts. I just talk too much. :jumpy:

I like Brewbirds post.....kind of hit the nailed them all me thinks.

Interesting topic. I do think it's going to be eye-opening on some levels to see how others perceive the persona that we *think* we are putting out there.

I think calling Dave "The Philospher" is spot-on. A lot of Dave's posts talk about how brewing makes him FEEL, how it's theraputic, etc. Very Zen.

RickBeer - "The Kindergarten Teacher" is spot on as well. Cracked me up to read that!

For Mashani, he comes across to me as more of a "Scientist" than an "Artist". Neither are meant to be negative, just that I see him as more precise and accurate than going by gut.

Gymrat seems to me like the 'cut to the chase' type. You know, when you're in a meeting with a bunch of people and it's going astray and dragging on and you have that one person that cuts through the crap and calls it like it is to get things back on track? That's how I see him (again, that may seem negative, but it isn't IMO).

BlackDuck reminds me of "IceMan" from Top Gun. Not the cocky part, just cool and calm going about his business in expert style and producing excellent/stellar beers while others make the mistakes.

Inkleg - "Johnny Appleseed", spreading the love.

Beer-lord - Part "Dr. Frankenstein" and part "Witch Doctor". Willing to experiment and try new things that sound cool/fun. Adding anything and everything to a beer. If you are missing something, it's likely in one of his IPAs.

yankeedag - "Yoda". Wise, he is.

Those are the first that come to mind. I'll post more later, too. These are the folks that I "know" the best so they came to mind first. I do also think that there are some areas of expertise with certain people, but I'll keep my thoughts/posts focused more on personalities.
