I'll take "Californian" as a western cowboy serial type: Somewhat scruffy, edgy, quick on the draw, but protects ladies. But I confess that I was born in Jersey and grew up on Long Island!
Plus it beats other nicknames I've had, like "Lurch" and "The Naked Beast"! (Don't ask)

All of the experienced guys with high posts from the Mr Beer forum who migrated to this great board I think if as "village elders".

Me, too! Even though I probably fit into that category, I'm humbled by the likes of Swenocha and Mashani and Kealia. Their beards are longer and grayer than mine.

Maybe that's why I feel the way I do. I've received so much more than I've given, of that I'm sure.

I've got to ponder this more for individual responses, but basically I hang out with you all because you all rock, I learn stuff and am happy to share what I know, and I don't get grief because I sometimes go brew some HME based beer to save time from my busy days.

As far as artist vs scientist, I would say that although I am very much a scientist I'm also somewhat loose in how I approach things at times. I've mentioned before how say for example hops, we don't know how they were stored before we got them, we don't know their exact age even, so the AAU's / utilization we will get from them is not consistent and unlikely to actually match what the package says. Without the proper equipment to actually test the AAUs of the hops we just don't know. So basically that means my inner scientist realizes that I should not bother worrying about it, so I do not stress about amounts under say 1/4oz, I don't measure to the gram or smaller fractions of an ounce. Someone who is stuck in analytical mode would probably bother with it. Same with malt/specialty grains, I generally will not bother measuring down below an ounce. It's just getting into a level of detail that I personally don't think makes better beer. But again someone in analytical mode would probably bother. I'll sometimes taste an ingredient (say an HME) and then figure out how much of something to add to it or how to tweak it otherwise based on my perceptions. That's more of an art then a science. I can't explain how I can do that in a logical way, it just "works out", I tend to always make beer I'm happy to drink. Experience more then anything I guess. I probably should be blending Geuze in some old dusty cellar, I'd probably be good at that.

Mash, that makes perfect sense to me. Human have an excellent ability to judge things by eye. A baseball player hits a 90mph ball with a stick, and directs it! Cops judge the speed of moving vehicles by looking at them, and so on. And my grandmother could cook wonderful meals with no recipes. So it certainly is both art and science.

I don't know about the scruffy part but I like the protecting the ladies side of you.

It's because you have an easygoing, laid back attitude (and your avatar reminds of California ).

Gymrat seems to me like the 'cut to the chase' type. You know, when you're in a meeting with a bunch of people and it's going astray and dragging on and you have that one person that cuts through the crap and calls it like it is to get things back on track? That's how I see him (again, that may seem negative, but it isn't IMO).

You pretty much have me pegged on that one.

One more: FIT - "The crazy relative". Maybe it's your uncle, father, grandfather, cousin, whatever. He reminds me of the family member that just refuses to grow up. And that's a good thing.

As I read this thread, I realize that it may come across to some as a 'small club' but I hope it doesn't seem that way. I know some threads can easily become a dialogue between just a few folks because they all enjoy the same style, or maybe they've become friends but nobody should ever feel like they are an outsider or feel weird about joining a discussion. Some of us are just wordy, and some of us have traded beers and emails/messages off-boards and gotten to know each other better. That doesn't change the fact that EVERYBODY here is welcome and encouraged to participate.
Honestly, the way we got to know each other was through posting and chatting here. The more the merrier.

And I once again encourage those who are interested in trading beers to reach out to others to get it going. If you see somebody post a recipe/beer that looks good to you send a message and ask if that person is interested in a trade. I'm betting that they will be flattered that you thought enough of their beer to ask - even if they can't do a trade. It's expensive and time consuming to do, so not everybody is up for it - but odds are that you'll start a discussion and get to know somebody even better as a result.
